It would be so much more useful if café websites could feature information about accessible parking, seating, restroom access, lighting and tables in their About Us sections rather than profiles of the owners and how quirky they are.

To the biker in downtown Hinesburg who gave me the blessing without getting one in return: I apologize. My bike and I were arguing about which gear to be in; she chose neutral. Stay shiny side up, friend.

Biking connects you to your city. You feel the sun, move your body, and actually experience your neighborhood. Cars do the exact opposite. They wall you off from the world, make streets dangerous, and shrink your entire community down to just point A and point B.

people understand that this is intended to target EVs, right? It gets rid of the gas tax, which only affects internal combustion vehicles, and replaces it with one that disproportionately hits EVs, which are much, much heavier for a given body size. That is why GM and Toyota are promoting it.

We could just scrap TSA and go back to having airports & airlines be responsible for their own security. We wouldn’t have this chaos when there’s a government funding gap, and as a nice perk we’d ditch a lot of time-consuming theater that adds little meaningful security benefit.

see? here's the thing. A lot of people are like, the earth is fucked, it's beyond salvation, it's hit the tipping point, but time and time again we see that if we just fucking fixed the problem, it rebounds so incredibly fast. Imagine what could be done if people actually cared

It's so refreshing to set this as a baseline with a vet practice. Like, I didn't go to school for this. If the vet says she needs a kneecap flubalometer test with full-twist into a step-out walkover, ffs let her do that. What am I going to tell this person of note except "he's a good boy".

In addition to adding Liquid Glass, which sucks, the MacOS Tahoe update solves that age-old problem of being able to see the volume level in a video project. Thanks, Apple!
Screenshot from iMovie showing how the new MacOS Tahoe cursor completely occludes the percentage level label for an audio track. Thanks, I hate it.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

GenAI allows these guys to do what they do when drunk and ganked up at office Christmas parties, at a mass scale. We're *all* there cringing while they lean in and excitedly slur their messed up shit at us while we're uncomfortably unable to disengage.

GenAI being fundamentally based on a rejection of consent is obvious, but it's not as obvious that it destroys the inhibitions of the people who already reject consent. It makes them act in public the way they used to only act when cornering their employees by the punch bowl or in their office

It's time once again for my annual #treebybike post. This is the 12/19/42 cover of @newyorker.com, so one full year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This would be the first real Christmas alone, or without a family member, for millions in the US. Gas and tire rationing had begun earlier that year.🗃️
A magazine cover, with a single illustration covering the entire page, and no headlines over the top. A hand illustration -- perhaps watercolors -- shows a snowy day and an empty road heading towards the viewer. In the distance, a cozy christmas tree store surrounded by green trees, some cut and some still standing, with a cozy cabin behind. In the foreground, a jaunty woman with hat and sunglasses and scarf bicycles toward us, with a christmas tree horizontally held on the front rack of her bike and a black scotty dog running alongside. She and the shop and the cabin are all in pastels; pinks and purples and white. Her white scarf and hat match the white snow on the store and cabin. It is a cheerful, jaunty, undaunted tone, and evenly spaced big snowflakes float down over it all. At the top the magazine name, The New Yorker, the date Dec. 19, 1942, and the Price: 15 cents. At the bottom is the signature of the artist, Garrett Price https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_Price
