Time to remind journalists (esp. those who insist we not "become part of the story" or put our thumbs on the scales) that REPORTING ON LEADS IN RACES ACTUALLY DECREASES TURN OUT. Horse race reporting on voting-in-progress AFFECTS THE OUTCOME. We have so much research on this. I'm so tired.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

these are not “autonomous” attacks: they are failures by humans to implement appropriate controls for the computers acting on their behalf, and we must not forget it.

Well that's why I said cat, not dog! My cat doesn't know the difference between 4:45 and 5pm when the seasons are changing, presumably bc the sun is changing positions. But 15 minutes of screaming is very annoying!

Incredibly interested in the creative development of this mascot. Why does it look like the Abominable Snowman? Not that it nec. shouldn't -- but I want to know why. What other options did they turn down, and for what reasons? I want to read the briefs!!

There is a particular kind of person who sees disability communities on social media and is ENRAGED that disabled people are not abject pathetic figures. And make no mistake, this kind of writing is about intellectual support for destroying disability accommodations, policies, and protections.

& Fwiw chronic illness imo (and I imagine disability) can be very all-consuming and also make some days very boring. Makes sense that it would become some people's whole thing, because our world makes it impossible to forget about & flares provide plenty of thinking time!

Absolutely wild how many people think their petty annoyances are actually Big Problems bc they don't like to think they're petty. Running-obsessed people annoy me, I see that as a personal problem not a signal of societal collapse.

If someone "outraced" law enforcement while committing a crime in order to get away with it, would WaPo say they were simply "subverting norms that guided others?"

A hundred years ago, the Society of Professional Journalists adopted a Code of Ethics, principles that guide our conduct. The code has changed some over the years — the latest released this month. Most of us follow a personal version. Read journalist/scholar Eric Deggans @edeggans.bsky.social

As with any journalism covering a layered, sensitive topic, each piece should include the WHOLE picture, because everyone can't (and won't, and won't have the opportunity to) read every story. We never leave the that for the follow up.

The scale very much creates and elevates the problem, as with many other journalistic norms that have become problematic. Photograph a protester at a rally and it exists locally in print for a day vs it's now on the internet forever, etc.

Thinking about this a lot ahead of my second-ever adjunct gig...Banned laptops last time and there was a student with accommodations allowed to use one. Planning on including a lesson on note-taking. Just can't imagine the benefits of digital notetaking outweigh the cons of the constant distraction.

ok but two things: 1. the bar isn't "helpful", its "truthful"; offering a bunch of lies with a smile isn't actually the goal here 2. people are pissed because the WH press insists on defending an ally of American fascism, not because they think you were lying about her being helpful

I think this gets to the heart of liberal-left complaints about the press. Political reporters think we're criticizing them for not being on "our" side. We're not. We're criticizing them for not being on journalism's side. Unplug from the DC celebrity access system and do honest independent work.

I think part of the pundit crack-up has been that they missed the big call of their lifetimes about which was the bigger threat to America: wokeness or authoritarianism. And rather than admitting that, they are doubling down on wokeness, while ignoring an authoritarianism that does not threaten them

At this point, minute-to-minute election result coverage is dangerous journalistic malpractice. Rolling ballot counts that aren't representative (most of them) mean nothing, are misleading and are *specifically being used to sow doubt in fair elections.* We have a duty to see this use & counter it.

I haven't seen many videos of El-Sayed (not a Michigan voter; only so many hours in the day) but now I'm even more confused by legacy media's DSA panic. A normal person who speaks normally instead of like an LLM trained solely on brainrot X posts or think tank white papers. The appeal is obvious!

I think there's a nuance here, in addition to the temptation to use it to keep up with "feeding the beast:" the possibility of finally *overcoming* the beast and get to the really good work. I see it happening with journalists. Do gooders tempted by the ability to maybe do more good. I get it.
