As a follow-up to the podcast on Pliny the Elder and its role in shaping American IPA, let’s remember another landmark beer that debuted 30 years ago. More regional and less buzzy, BridgePort IPA was nevertheless a very important building block in the development of hoppy American ales.

Always put off places like that. And places where the second you start reading a book a voice pipes up with "what are you reading?" Still, not the only time the most ardent advocates of a certain type of drink or establishment have been a stark advert against them

One of my main anxiety reducing escapes is to sit in a nice pub or bar and lose a few hours to my kindle. When that happens... it ceases tonbe a nice place. Once I got laughed at by a group of Real Ale ***** for reading a book.

Sitting in a pub that asks you not to use mobile phones, fine, I’m sitting there reading my Kindle, and a member of the Real Ale Twats club passes and says I shouldn’t be doing that, I finished my warm pint and left - having talked about the joy of pubs today this is rather rubbish

Yesterday on my perambulation around Totnes pubs I was in the bay Horse. As I sat in my cosy sofa with a pint of Pilsner Urquell I heard the landlord answer a young guy who’d asked about the Theakston’s Mild, ‘it’s like a small Guinness’, the guy immediately bought a pint… one way to sell mild?

There are two types of people. Those for whom the Nelson is one of their favourite pubs. And those that haven't been there yet! One day I'll buy you a pint there, but sadly I am already drinking elsewhere on the day of your upcoming event.
