Experiments in Uganda reveal that employers and workers prefer to share income through paid work rather than cash, even when the work produces nothing, suggesting that some overstaffing reflects social support rather than inefficiency.

Fascinating paper @hthirumurthy.bsky.social and team!!! The possibility of a bright future motivates. The possibility of a dim one does the opposite. Something I see all the time in the clinic and hospital.

I agree with this. Cannot be about volume, amount of funding, etc anymore. How good are the ideas or how good might they be? Harder to evaluate, more subjective (or not?) -- but worth figuring out. I've adopted a moneyball approach to hiring along these lines for the lab. So far so good!

There's also something to be said about the beauty of the craft and how that inspires others. There is nothing inspiring AI agents solving hard problems. These costs are underappreciated. Benefits may also be fewer than we think. This is leaving existential risk aside.

On that latter point, the part of research where it is hard, where your literature review takes you to new places, where things are unexpected, where you learn every corner of your data set. Those are incredibly productive for setting up new discoveries. AI doesn't do that.

Atheendar Venkataramani @atheendar.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Yeah it won't. The market, who holds the power, plus all the cheerleading from the rest of us will push us towards the frontier quickly, without any understanding. "They are focused on whether they can do something. They never stop to ask if they should do something."

I think we should stop AI for a while until we figure out what we want from it. I'm unimpressed and think costs outweigh benefits.

Forthcoming in the AER: "The Long-run Effect of Air Pollution on Survival" by Julian Reif and Tatyana Deryugina.
aeaweb.org
The Long-run Effect of Air Pollution on Survival
(Forthcoming Article) - Many environmental hazards have long-run health effects, but quasi-experimental studies typically measure outcomes and treatment over short time periods. We develop a new framework for quantifying the effect of air pollution exposure on life expectancy. Using daily changes in wind direction as an instrument for air pollution, we first charac- terize the dynamic mortality effects of short-run exposure. We then incorporate these estimates into a demographic model to quantify the lifelong effects of a permanent re- duction in air pollution exposure. Ninety percent of the survival benefits accrue after the first fifty years of life.
