One crazy thing about this new outpouring of racism against South Asians and calls for expulsion or forced assimilation is it was kicked off by some brown skinned students at a Texas game wearing cowboy hats and excitedly celebrating their football team — ie some guys very assimilated to America.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

The underrated irony of the Right's failed (and laughably short-lived) attempt to recast Kirk as their MLK, as their own civil-rights martyr, is that Kirk focused much of his last 18 months on discrediting King and the Civil Rights Act, wanting to remove him from the pantheon of American heroes.

There's something beautiful about the way the New Atheism/rationalism-tinged "evolutionary psychology" flavor of woo conflicts with everything we know about evolution and human prehistory so you need to illustrate it with a modern depiction of ancient mythology.

Trending: NYC mayor's 9/11 memorial controversy This framing is 🐴💩. The “controversy” isn't Mamdani's; it's 9/11 families don't want the Muslim mayor at this year's ceremonies. Mamdani was 9 years old on 9/11. His parents were born in India. And AL-QAEDA brought down the towers, NOT global Islam.
excerpt from CNN article poorly headlined, “New pain for some 9/11 families as New York’s mayor finds himself in commemoration controversy”:

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the first Muslim to hold the office, said he would “proudly honor” those affected by standing alongside them at ground zero, but some relatives of victims say they don’t want him there. “I don’t know if I could stomach that,” Robert Hughes told CNN. Others are unhappy the focus is on the mayor — in part because of his political ideology and his identity — and not their loved ones. For Liz Miller, it is time for acceptance, not division. “Unity can represent itself as kindness and compassion towards others, even when you do think differently,” she said.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist who is a lightning rod especially for those on the right, is now the subject of a petition to have him banned from ceremonies commemorating what happened. Opponents castigate him for what they say are extremist views on his support for Palestinian rights and criticism of the Israeli government.

The New York Times refuses to include captions on the photos on its homepage, so if you're just scrolling through, you might assume their featured picture of Mitch McConnell is current when it's really from two months ago.
Screenshot from the home page of the New York Times:

A headline reads, “Why Mitch McConnell Isn't Giving Up His Senate Seat / Democrats are demanding that the Kentucky Republican resign. Others who were sidelined for far longer faced no such calls, but times are changing.”

It is accompanied by an uncaptioned, and more importantly, undated photo of Sen. Mitch McConnell in a wheelchair being pushed through the lobby of the Senate Russell Office Building (judging by a sign in the photo). The same headline and photo as in the first picture, but screenshotted from the *article page* not the home page. The caption reads: “Senator Mitch McConnell heading to a vote in May.” I added a red oval around the words “in May” using Apple Preview tools.

Not a single word about how these tariffs violate both our WTO & USCMA obligations. Every time Trump does this, the NYT & other outlets simply write as if we live in an international vacuum, where the US has no obligations under signed, ratified international treaties. It's journalistic malpractice.

This is the top of the New York Times home page right now. I ask you: What's going on in this picture? Who is protesting, against whom, over what? How does this relate to any of the accompanying headlines? Why can't they caption photos on their home page?
Top of the New York Times home page

The lead: Iran-Backed Houthis Expand Conflict With Red Sea Blockade / The move against Saudi ships will add new pressure on energy markets. Tehran said had received new proposals from mediators.

Next story: Pentagon Withheld Dozens of U.S. Military Injuries in Iran War / Central Command is not required to release information about injured troops, especially when they quickly return to duty, a military official said.

To the right of these headlines is an uncaptioned picture of a large rally of what thousands of people, maybe tens of thousands…somewhere. Billboards in the distance are in…Arabic, maybe? The crowd is facing a large Jumbotron-style monitor showing either another gathering or another part of this same rally. All the raised signs at the rally are facing away from the camera.

Two more headlines below those stories and picture:

If you ever doubt how magical this world is, one day you will decide to go to a World Cup watch party in Oakland that you found online to root for a country where you spent two years trying to coax English out of the mouths of Cape Verdean teenagers. 1/7

And at the watch party you will ask the organizer if he's from Cape Verde. He will say yes, from Praia. And you'll say oh! I lived there for two years. I was a teacher. And he will ask, "What's your name?" You will tell him and he will say,
"You were my teacher."
CABO VERDE

And across 30+ years and 6,000 miles you will hug a now man who tried to find you and remembered the songs you taught him and his classmates and he will apologize for how badly behaved they all were. And you will laugh and try not to cry and gape in wonder at at this crazy world.

Jill Tucker
@jilltucker

You will remember how much you love the World Cup. And what the Peace Corps meant to you. What those students, 40 to a class with no glass on the windows, meant to you.

Ivan, the grown man with a touch of grey in his beard, will tell you later he has struggled to describe what it meant to him to meet again - that he shared our photo with classmates.
And when he returns from watching the Cabo Verde game, we will try to find the words together.

Jill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h And then you read that the US
House of Representatives will vote a day before that game on an amendment to eliminate the Peace Corps, which costs 1/6 the price of the Tomahawk missiles the US used in the war on Iran.

Mr. Lander benefited from his deep roots in the 10th District, which covers Lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. His victory makes him the likely winner of the general election in November.

On Tuesday, Lander said TK

Maybe for the best. The Knicks losing Game 3 means they can't clinch with Game 4 means Trump is less likely to come back on Wednesday because you know if the Knicks swept in four he was going to insert himself into the team celebration and maybe try to take the trophy home with him, too

In honor of Bob Dylan's birthday, here's a 1963 Columbia Records ad spreading the notion that he was a hobo from the age of 10
HOW MANY ROADS MUST A MAN WALK DOWN…

Bob Dylan has walked down many roads. For most of his 22 years he “rode freight trains for kicks and got beat up for laughs, cut grass for quarters and sang for dimes.” And his songs today are the sounds he sopped up all those years on the road—“the coyote's call and the train whistlin's moan, the ol' time pals an' first run gals, the faces you can't find again.”

Bob does what a true folk singer is supposed to do—sing about the important ideas and events of the times. And he does it better than anybody else. One Dylan fan, Joan Baez, said, “I feel it, but Dylan can say it. He's phenomenal.”

His new best-selling album (the first was *Bob Dylan*) is *The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan.* It features ten of Bob's own compositions, including the sensational hit, “Blowin' in the Wind.” Also, songs on subjects ranging from love (“Girl from the North Country”) to atomic fall-out (“A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall”). Hear it and you'll know why Bob Dylan is the voice of the times.

BOB DYLAN ON COLUMBIA RECORDS

The above text was printed white on a black-background magazine advertisement dominated by a monochrome photograph of a 22(?)-year-old Bob Dylan standing at a microphone, acoustic guitar in his hands and a harmonica on a holder around his neck, earnestly looking out at a presumptive audience. The New York Times does not caption the photographs on its homepage, and it amuses me to think that thousands, maybe millions of readers might look at this and wonder if this is Jaxson Dart at a Trump rally. (answer at the bottom of the alt-text)
Screencap of the top of The Athletic's sports coverage on the current homepage of The New York Times featuring

a) three headline stories:

“Amid Reaction to Its Quarterback's Trump Rally Appearance, Giants Have a Priority: The episode surrounding Jaxson Dart is a reminder that New York can't let its big personalities become a great distraction, a columnist for The Athletic writes.”

“West Ham Is Relegated. Now It Must Make $200 Million in Player Sales.: After dropping out of the Premier League on the final day of the season, the club now need [sic] to help fill the financial void.”

“The Reason Behind M.L.B.'s Stolen Base Boom Might Surprise You: Steals are dramatically up, and it's not because the league is suddenly brimming with speedsters.”

and b) a photo of a dejected-looking black-skinned man with a thin beard and braided hair, in a powder-blue jacket, amid several soap-bubbles in the air around him and a mostly out-of-focus crowd of people behind him.

The crossed-hammers logo on the jacket belongs to West Ham United, whose stadium bubble machine goes into operation with every home goal—but you'd have to know at least one of those things to figure out the photo, and I think it's safe to say that most New York Times readers would not know either of those things.
