Sliding in just before the weekend, I wrote about why Zoe Kazan and Florence Pugh's reinterpretation of Cathy from East of Eden is so brilliant—and so much better than the typical 'subversive' feminist rewrite.

Netflix's 'East of Eden' Brilliantly Reinterprets 'Evil' Cathy—Without Betraying Steinbeck
Zoe Kazan's series grounds its feminist perspective on one of literature's most maligned characters in a shrewd reading of the novel

'Tip Toe' can be a real tough watch, and everyone talks like they've been dosed with truth serum, but Alan Cumming is absolutely magnificent and there's something unexpectedly validating about a show that clearly states how bad things really are. In probing the insanity, it makes you feel sane.

Okay, you know my real answer but let's not open THAT can of worms this fine Thursday. I guess it's a little broad but I would argue that most non-academic writing about early film is awful. Poorly researched, based on hearsay, clear the writer doesn't want to be there.

Every week for six seasons, countless bloggers wrote long, discursive posts about what might be happening on Lost, and none of them were remotely right, because in fact the people running Lost didn’t know what was happening.

I watched 4 blood-bucket prom massacres and all I got was this lousy certainty that the decline of our society is shrinking the moral distance between Carrie's monsters and its innocent bystanders to near nonexistence. (Mike Flanagan's series: good.)

As a transplant (21 years and counting) I obviously agree with this. I also think the best way to alleviate your anxiety about being a "real" New Yorker is to contribute something to its community instead of just consuming, whether that's art or activism or volunteering or throwing parties, etc.

NY food culture is so weird in the influencer era. A soup dumpling place we’ve been going to for years has a viral menu item. 20ish ppl waiting outside for just that thing, for takeout. Some had been there for upwards of an hour. But if you wanted to eat inside the restaurant? Many free tables.

Also important to be very clear about what the words people hide behind actually mean. "Apolitical" is not a coherent ideology or some kind of innate orientation. It's a stance calculated (poorly, in this case) to maximize marketability. It's subsuming the human being to a product called Ed Sheeran.
