Decarbonizing the grid with Camus Energy. CEO, founder, dog appreciator. Ex-Google. I know it gets dark, but there's always a light.

The writer Camus gave a speech in 1957 where he talks about another generation's view of what seemed like a doomed world, and his own answer to that, which was the responsibility and privilege of telling that story. I find it hopeful. www.nobelprize.org/prizes/liter...

While assembling my company's employee handbook (where you have to choose the kinds of leave the company will offer), I was horrified to discover that Montana specifically excludes domestic violence from "victim of crime" leave.

My son is the same age. It's unfathomable to think of kids appearing in court, alone, without representation or adult support, and being deported like this.

Normal, non-big-tech affiliated, non-effective altruist funded organizations working on ethical tech have been absolutely financially *devastated* in the last few years, thanks to both Trump and Big Tech deciding it no longer needs to pretend to care about ethics.

I think the current threat profile is fixated around science fiction scenarios, while the real near term risks are going to be supercharged fraud and cyber attack vulnerabilities. Your hospital scenario highlights this. It doesn't matter if the agents are conscious.

The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

All the plastic humanity has ever produced is ~10 billion tonnes. Humans emitted ~10 billion tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere in the first three months of 2026. When we appreciate orders of magnitude, we see how intractable the CO₂ problem becomes once we dump it into the atmosphere.

This is exactly what I've seen with the antivaxxers I know. It's an anxiety/control thing. They end up seeking the community of like-minded people, not the other way around, because the story has become more important to them than their other relationships.

Published estimates of AI energy use per prompt (~0.3 watt-hours) appear reassuring small. But they are increasingly disconnected from how we actually use AI. Modern agentic tools use around 600 times more energy per prompt, as I discuss in my latest over at The Climate Brink www.theclimatebrink....

I feel like this suffers from comparing the wrong things. The author was unusually driven and successful given her background - got into Harvard, job at Google, wrote an autobiography quite young. That drive exists in every generation, along with the possibility of atypical success.

Yeah, I find this really interesting - right now, price increases are not datacenter/load growth driven. It feels like we're on a cusp - either prices go absolutely through the roof, or we figure out how load growth helps pay to grow the system. Probably a bit of both. Opportunity as well as risk.

Heat is a health and safety issue. I'm glad to see London announcing plans to adapt - these heat waves will only become more frequent and intense in the years to come. I hope the adaptation includes widespread adoption of air conditioning. It's not a luxury, it saves lives.
020
Astrid Atkinson @astridatkinson.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I was in London at the start of the week during the early part of this heat wave. I grew up in Australia before AC and I know heat. Australia had fans, windows that open, air conditioning in public spaces. London has none of that. At 85f/30c it was dangerously hot in most indoor spaces.

Astrid Atkinson @astridatkinson.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I grew up in Australia where people also took this view, though "it's only hot 2 weeks of the year" was clearly delusional in their case. But a two week heatwave can kill; and so this is a policy, energy pricing, and public health communications issue.

Astrid Atkinson @astridatkinson.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
The British seem to view air conditioning as a sin. I suggested to a couple of people that it often gets hot at home. "Well, but you guys are used to it, yeah?" No, we're not - we have widespread access to AC.

Astrid Atkinson @astridatkinson.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I was in London earlier this week and they have no infrastructure for handling even minor heat waves. Dangerously hot for most people because there are few places of refuge and no way to shed heat (ceiling fans, ground units, openable windows!)
