The Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard has become a key outpost for Arctic science. But geopolitical tensions are complicating research efforts. Learn more: scim.ag/3RiuWPK
Archipelago of science. Research facilities span much of Svalbard, supporting studies of glaciers, permafrost, ecosystems, the atmosphere, and the Arctic Ocean.

Svalbard’s weather is fickle, but one might expect highs of -9*C in April here, 1200 miles from the North pole. But over recent days it’s more like June. Max of +7*C, T shirt weather, and rivers starting to flow, snowmobiles stranded. In my student days +7*C would be a hot July day.
