Interesting to compare the 2 sea-ice indices: extent and area. While Arctic sea-ice extent is still approaching its annual minimum, sea-ice area has already passed its minimum. This suggests that initial freeze-up mainly increases ice concentration before expanding the cover. @osi-saf.eumetsat.int

Look at the Barents Sea! Relative to the 1981-2010 climate reference period, there is unusually little sea ice for this time of year. In fact, the Barents Sea ice extent has reached record-low levels in six of the past 12 months (Aug-Dec and June), indicating later freeze-up and earlier melt.

Trying to refreeze Arctic sea ice by pumping ocean water onto its surface is infeasible and a distraction from emissions cuts, but it signals how desperate we are because we’re simply not decarbonizing fast enough (or at all).
