Current understanding of the #rasuwa disaster shows a very large rock avalanche released from the valley north of #Langtang-Lirung. Parts of a #glacier were involved in the failure, likely contributing large amounts of water, though other water sources undoubtedly contributed. lnkd.in/p/eR3XUPkr

Exceptional snow accumulation in Svalbard this season, combined with unusually mild temperatures, highlights the shift from a cold–dry to a warm–wet Arctic climate regime. Meltwater lingered too long in the firn fell in love with staying, Refroze itself into ice. When new meltwater comes, there’s no room left to rest runoff guaranteed, the glacier lost it’s lovely buffer. Observations from an accumulation area at 700m.asl in Svalbard. #climatechange #glaciology #firn

Here's a closer look at the record low sea ice conditions around #Svalbard. The ice edge is still close to the 85°N line of latitude along the Atlantic front. That's a lot of open water into the Barents Sea region! Data from AMSR2.
