Wow, these sequestration rates (even in medium scenario) are not just unrealistic, they are fantastical. Our work on geological limits to carbon sequestration shows that even achieving 1 Gt/y will be challenging without significant tech breakthrough. Relying on CCS today is not a realistic plan!

Discovery & exploitation of US shale gas is one of the biggest stories of energy sufficiency in the world with significant economic benefits. However, creating jobs is not one of them. US shale is increasingly automated & efficient. Same with datacenters - permanent job creation will be minimal.

Not in the paper, but I'll add this anecdote. A friend who used to work for an operator that did a lot of carbon storage told me that their biggest expense was remediating old wells that could be leaky. So I'm skeptical that we can use existing boreholes or even entire assets for this.

I agree Sleipner has worked well but we write about how unique the geology is and even that project suffered from sand clogging and plume migration issues. I am not it can't work but that urgent investments in technical advances to solve known engineering/geologic issues is critical to its success.

This is indeed unfortunate but there are still technical challenges involved - we haven't figured out all the issues with sequestration and everyone seems to assume we can store Gt of CO2 if only the costs come down. We just wrote a paper about it. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

This chart shows # of wells needed at various CO2 injection rates to achieve CCS targets (diagonal lines). At typical rates (0.2-0.4 Mt/y), we need 1000s of wells/yr to reach 1-3 Gt/yr rates. (For comparison: # active drilling rigs in June 2026: 581). iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

We literally wrote this paper to show that it is not just a policy problem - there are serious technology challenges for which we don't have solutions. CDR can be under $10 but if you cannot sequester the removed CO2 geologically, then it doesn't matter.

Advocates often point to EOR to say that we have been sequestering CO2 successfully for decades. However, they fail to note that average injection rate for EOR projects is only 0.0045 Mt/y and done intermittently, far lower than rates required for point source CO2 sequestration.

We are not anti-CCS. In fact, the opposite. However, that requires making urgent investments to solve engineering bottlenecks, making data from pilot and commercial projects readily available so we can iterate faster, having subsurface experts inform energy system models & permitting reform. /End

Even low end of 2050 targets (1 Gt/y) would need thousands of new wells drilled every year until 2050 - more drilling than the entire current US O&G industry. Bottom line: without significant tech advances, CO2 sequestration at the scale needed for net-zero may not be practicable.

Arvind Ravikumar @arvindpawan1.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Case in point: Gorgon (Australia), world's largest CCS project. Designed rate: 3.5 Mt/y Realized rate: 0.4 Mt/y At that rate, hitting 2050 gigaton-scale targets would mean building 250 Gorgon-scale projects every single year between now & 2050. Realistic injection rates are likely 0.2-0.5 Mt/y.

Arvind Ravikumar @arvindpawan1.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
We reviewed data from every demonstration and commercial CO2 sequestration project. Realized injection rates were significantly lower than designed rates - and bigger projects fell short by more. The issues that plagued these projects will not be surprising to subsurface experts.

Most energy models treat carbon storage as a cost problem: make it cheap enough and it scales to gigatonnes/year. Whether it's achievable from a geologic and engineering perspective has never really been questioned. We went digging.
