FWIW, I think a fuckup on this scale in time to wreck them electorally was *almost* inevitable from Day 1, precisely because this is the Special Birthday Boy presidency in which there are almost no limits on Trump's madness and every proposed policy disaster has a real shot at going all the way.

I love the optimism about Dems winning in November - I share it! And: I'm a tiny bit nervous that winning will free folks of the urgency to fix deeper structural problems in our party that will fuck us in the long-haul if we don't grapple with them.

Pay attention Dems. Gov Beshear won twice, in a deep red state, and never threw trans people under the bus. He led with compassion rather than the fear and cowardice we've seen from some of our Ohio candidates and party leadership.

In every high-stakes campaign you see the same pattern: talented candidates know exactly how to talk to people until the Democratic campaign management class comes in to screw it up with their weird pet bullshit.

Idea: Maybe we shouldn't be treating 7th grade girls volleyball like the Thunderdome? It's not just bad for the parents (who hate each other due to playing time) and culture (watch ESPN for ten seconds), it burns out the kids and makes them worse adults AND athletes. Sports are supposed to be fun!

One thing I have been a bit surprised by is how much the Putin Is Strongman thing that the right love so much has managed to survive ostentatiously failing to win a war against a tiny neighbour. All the "Biden's they/them army vs Putin's supermacho-men" stuff managed to survive the former's victory!

if you ever wonder how Americans became the richest major country on the planet but most of us still feel so poor, looking at what we spend on cars — not just directly but in tax money for infrastructure and space in the built environment — is the answer.

”Obama sealed the deal“ is baffling. He didnt want to go out on a limb on gay rights and played it safe. He presided over a huge cultural shift and went with it, but didn’t push boundaries. Biden literally embarrassed the admin by supporting marriage equality first as VP. Biden is not a radical.

Realizing the extent to which this is true wildly changed my opinions about how to deal with Trumpism, since they're never going to be satisfied unless they're actively dominating everyone else. You can't give them some concessions and go back to the status quo: they're reactionary revolutionaries.

I see two things going on: 1) Like blogosphere coverage 25 years ago, the NYT seem miffed that he isn’t relying on their pretty openly racist metro reporters to get messages out; 2) Mamdani is a model for how Democrats can evade hostile media gatekeeping to engage more effectively with voters.
