Recently, I was reading about a new-ish trend in publishing—memoir plus. And I have to say, despite being a big fan of many books that can be categorized in this way, I kind of hate the label.

Last week I got into the inextricability of plot and character, so for this week I thought it could be fun to give an overview on developing plot from character. That’s right, friends, this is an intro to GMC (Goal-Conflict-Motivation).

Tim Curry and Dolly Parton have taught us not only that you should be bigger, weirder, gayer, and freakier, but also that those qualities are what people will love about you. The things that make you strange and amazing are the things that will resonate with other strange and amazing people

Would you rather read a badly-plotted book, or a book with flat characters? This hotly-debated question crossed my feed yesterday. With the obvious answer being “neither,” my second answer is “what constitutes ‘bad plotting’ is a genre question,” followed closely by “sometimes, it’s the same book."

I recently finished Jazmina Barrera’s On Lighthouses, translated from the Spanish by Christina MacSweeney. Towards the end of the book, she writes that the figure of the bat is the antithesis of the lighthouse: “The former emits geometrical light, the latter represents organic obscurity.”

I've been realizing that people probably have no idea what my pfp actually is—it's a diagram by Freud in a letter to Fleiss, in which he wrote of the sketch: “Work consists of a series of such stages at deeper and deeper levels.” This is largely what editing is like as a process!

YOUR DEATH IS NOT YOUR OWN is an adult necromantic fantasy combining an f/f take on NBC’s Hannibal with the death magic of Kerstin Hall’s ASUNDER. It's a heart-worming tale of belonging and the dangers of falling in love with an undead sociopath #A #F #H #QueerPit
Fostered to the gamblers and cheats of Vegas House as a young child, Jona has little experience with the dead who plot against the living or the necromancers who fight them. But when she learns that Madai, her long-estranged father figure and legendary necromancer, has violated their culture’s greatest taboo and returned from death, Jona knows she must discover what happened to him.
Jona makes Madai’s younger sister, Renee-Lois, her first ally and falls unexpectedly in love. Renee-Lois encourages Jona to accept the darker parts of herself: her forbidden magic and her strange empathy with the dead. What Jona doesn’t know is that Madai’s sister has been dead for a long time and her body is being animated by the Godqueen of the Kingdom of the Dead, working to turn Jona’s home into her personal meat locker.
By the time Jona discovers Renee-Lois’ true identity, the Godqueen holds all the cards. There’s no honest chance of winning. But Jona is a Vegas trickster at heart and at every other suit–and she’s never played honestly.

Because it's never just about language. Queer and trans people deserve to see ourselves represented, yes, but language is also being used at the legislative level to villainize and erase us (speaking from a U.S. perspective here, though this is true in many places across the world as well) #StetChat

A2: People use multiple pronouns and should be allowed to see that aspect of themselves in stories too. As editors, it's not our job to make this simpler or more mainstream by erasing this, but to ensure the usage is consistent to that character (and that character at that point in time). #StetChat

this is one I will always highlight, particularly for cishet writers. In the queer community, there's been a bit more discussion over whether or not it matters if sexual orientation is a choice (as in, even if we did choose this, you should still respect it!) #stetchat

NORMAL MAN!!! ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND WORDS!!!
Nothing, no one opposes your writing. Everyone is anxious that you write. You do not need certain conditions to write. You are so strong you can write anywhere on anything at any time. You can carry on a wild social life and still write one hundred thousand words a month or more. Your brain is so fixed that you can write at any time, anywhere.
The mere beginning of writing is sufficient to put you in a happy mood, any high mood. Writing does not tire you. You said writing was hard work but that you knew was a lie. You know now it is easy, very easy. Writing puts you into an ecstatic state of mind almost as high as intercourse. You love to write. The Navy had no influence upon your writing. The Navy never stopped you writing. On the 422 what you wrote were not stories. You love to write. Your writing has a deep hypnotic effect on people and they are always pleased with what you write.
Having a market is immaterial.

Modern Times is a South Minneapolis staple, and a personal favorite haunt. For the duration of the occupation they're renaming themselves Post Modern Times and going to a donation-only model. Everyone but ICE can eat for free. Donations: Venmo: moderntimescafe givemn.org/story/centralimpactfund
The text in the image reads:

Until this occupation is over, we are Post Modern Times

> Post Modern Times is free for all with the exception of our occupiers!

Donate: @moderntimescafe (Venmo)
givemn.org/story/centralimpactfund or in personmoderntimescafempls Hello,

My name is Dylan. I own Modern Times Cafe in South Minneapolis and have for 15 years. Modern Times is on the corner of 32nd and Chicago Ave; 6 blocks from where George Floyd was murdered, 3 blocks from where Renee Good was executed, and a mere neighborhood away from where Alex Pretti was murdered.

After ICE Agents shot and killed Renee and then Alex, I was at the scene within hours. I witnessed hostile and aggressive armed goons sent by the Federal Government protecting each other from unarmed, outraged citizens. I bore witness to these atrocities and was tear-gassed, smoke bombed, and concussion grenaded alongside my neighbors.

Minneapolis has been living through the abhorrent horror of the federally sanctioned abduction of our neighbors, public executions of people exercising their rights, and a targeted escalation of government violence. It's an atrocious and despicable occupation.

We are entering yet another week of this occupation with a deep sense of dread and mourning. We absolutely cannot go on as we have. am sick of generating money for the soldiers in our streets and for a government that won't protect us - a government who is actively inflicting daily harm on its citizens.Effective tomorrow we are done making money for the fascists that occupy our city. We refuse to generate taxes under the guise of a functioning for-profit capitalist business aligned with government strategy. Amidst many strategic pivots and determined leadership, Modern Times has been barely soluble since 2020. Therefore, for the remainder of the government occupation, we will function as a free and donation based restaurant, Post Modern Times. Everyone is welcome EXCEPT ICE.

Hours will not change but our menu will be smaller. Staff agreed to be present on a volunteer basis, working from shared tips and community donations.

Post Modern Times is a small stance amidst a gigantic fight that may shape the future of this country. I am inspired by the ways our community has grown together, our hearts breaking open, to give and receive care in all the ways we can. May we continue to see each other in the streets.A photo of Modern Times cafe, on Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, during warmer weather

Years ago I went through a phase of putting chicken legs on ... stuff? Everything I've ever made has always been a bit absurd and self-indulgent. For example: here is a breakfast radish on legs, which I made of wool and wire.
Photo of an object in front of a plain white background. The object is a soft-sculpture made of wool. It's a breakfast radish in red and white with white roots growing out of the bottom and big leafy dark green leaves growing from the top. It's also in a bird pose and standing on two bright orange chicken legs. It's an odd animal.
