AMERICAN* FUJO* is Alexis Rippen & tshirt3000's premier anthology on fandom culture, trans identity, and general overanalysis. Our project tries to asterisk and complicate its categories of both "American" and "Fujo" as much as possible, interrogating gender and sexuality, power of all kinds, and the virtual communities we call fandom.

Our contributors range from actual self-identified American fujos to writers who are emphatically neither. They answer these questions through illustration, comics, essays, and autotheory, developing creative ways to capture fandom and its discontents. The anthology surveys a wide range of topics, from transgender fujoshism (in any direction) to race and belonging within theoretically progressive fandom. We want to make the full vibrancy of fandom as accessible as possible, and theorize both its possibilities and its limits through this anthology.

WHAT IS THE MAINSTREAM? A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

ok so. since we last spoke a lot has gone down in yaoi world. aka heated rivalry kind of blew up fujoing out to the mainstream. and everyone got in our lane (wrote fujo thinkpieces). now it’s our time to study them back. fujos analyzing the mainstream analyzing fujos.

so i asked everyone to create a work of art/writing that responds to yaoi breaking containment. like. when is a time someone who wasn’t a fujo encountered your whole thing? what happened?

the pieces in this zine span explaining your perversions to “normal” people, the futility of trying to appeal to them in the first place, shipping those normal people (aka RPF), and talking to people who are gay but not fujos and/or fans but not fujos and/or fujos but not fujos. iykyk.

i always wanted yaoi zine to be a place where we could talk to each other first and foremost. so we remain firmly aimed at the thinking perverts of the world, rather than the mainstream. as you can probably tell by our lovely cover.

i look forward to talking with you again soon in the next issue.
