GWAS predicts diverse receptor-binding proteins. Recall of the strongest GWAS predictor identified for each K-locus. For each K-locus, predictors with precision ⩾ 0.8 were selected, retaining the one with the highest F1×MCC product across clustering thresholds; only those with F1 ⩾ 0.5 and MCC ⩾ 0.5 are shown (with the corresponding K-loci names bolded). Shapes indicate the clustering threshold at which the strongest predictor was identified; colours reflect the top predicted ECOD domain, or grey for unannotated regions. For the 16 predictors obtained, AlphaFold3 models were generated based on representative proteins, with ECOD domains coloured based on HHpred predictions.

Humans have stronger social affinity for people with matched 'neurotypes'. @brendonwatson20.bsky.social &co reveal a similar phenomenon in #PrairieVoles; #voles have higher #social affinity for the opposite sex when placed in matched- versus mixed-neurotype dyads @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4bUJjjz
Summary of main findings. Top: The main finding from Experiment 1 is that males from mixed dyads tended to behave more persistently toward the divider compared to males from matched dyads. No such effects were observed in females. Bottom: The main finding from Experiment 2 is that females from mixed dyads were more likely to chase and attack compared to females from matched dyads. Correlations between Experiments 1 and 2 reinforced the influence of dyad type on social behaviors (not illustrated here). Furthermore, matched-dyad females were more likely to transition from chasing to huddling, even though chasing was less frequent in females from matched dyads.

Infection-induced elevation of gut glycosaminoglycans fosters microbiota expansion in Drosophila melanogaster
Arias-Rojas et al. performed a genome-wide association study in Drosophila melanogaster and identified host genetic variants, particularly in heparan sulfate synthesis genes, associated with increased commensal Lactiplantibacillus plantarum abundance. Heparan sulfate enhances bacterial adhesion, biofilm formation, and modulates intestinal homeostasis, microbiota composition, and immune response, thus preventing dysplasia.

Top: Dscam1 gene structure and isoform diversity in pancrustacean species. Top: Schematic diagrams of Drosophila melanogaster Dscam1 gene and protein structure. The variable exons or domains are shown in color, while the constant exons or domains are shown in gray. Middle: Phylogenetic distribution of Dscam1 isoform diversity. A phylogenetic tree of Pancrustacean species is shown in the lower panel. The upper panel shows distribution of the number of exons in variable exon 4, exon 6, or exon 9 clusters in Pancrustacean species, with variable exon clusters shown in different colors. The middle panel shows distribution of the number of potential ectodomains diversity, where species with a special number of diversities are highlighted. Bottom: Reducing the Dscam1 diversity affects adult survival upon Beauveria bassiana infection. Survival curves after Triton or B. bassiana infection for wild-type and exon 4 (left), exon 6 (middle), and exon 9 (right) mutants are shown, respectively. Early immune education mechanisms remain poorly understood. This Primer explores a @plosbiology.org study which uses math modeling to provide mechanistic insights into how the infant #ImmuneSystem learns to distinguish beneficial & harmful #microbes 🧪 Paper: plos.io/4lsJ8i5 Primer: plos.io/4oHrDNI
A simplified model of immune education. The model developed by Tepekule and colleagues incorporates key inputs such as maternal human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and IgA, infant diet, and endogenous IgA produced in the infant gut. These inputs are then modeled within the context of the infant gut lumen, where IgA can mask or neutralize microbial taxa, and HMOs and plant-derived polysaccharides selectively promote different taxa. Model parameters are informed by existing in situ longitudinal IgA-seq data and infant feeding records. The main outputs include the abundance and IgA binding levels of each modeled microbial taxon, allowing for predictions of how variations in inputs (e.g., changes in breastfeeding or diet) shape the developing infant microbiome.
