*bangs head against wall forever* Apparently the way Burnham thinks we get parity of esteem is by saying vocational quals are for non-academic kids.

The extent of the PISA gap between England and other western European countries in particular is extraordinary In reading, the 25% most disadvantaged young people in England outperformed the average for all students in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway and many other countries

It's just weird isn't it when the British Museum is running a sold-out exhibition, when The Odyssey reports $1billion at the box office, when the V&A has just opened the most innovative and accessible museum model in Europe....and this is what our minister for research comes out with.

The role of "protector" under patriarchy seems to mean "I wield the option of violence" that can also be turned directly on women who are not obedient, aka submit to being protected according to his rules.

One reason England does so well is our second generation immigrants outperform their peers which is not true in most OECD countries. We are also very good at integration. And it's v sad that this is never acknowledge in debates on immigration.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

So many juvenile ideas about what rebellion & revolution are. Dolly put money & time into things that helped people she might never meet. She gave of herself musically AND made her fame a vehicle for generosity. Sincere, unswerving, true charity. Only revolutionary because too few w/ power try it.

Let me be exceptionally clear: the reason why minorities are consistently better served, across the world, by central and anonymous exams is because they are better served by a fair assessment process, and not one in which they are the victim of either witting or unwitting bias.

"They are rejecting the humanities in favour of subjects we traditionally think of as difficult: maths, physics, even further maths." I would extend this further - a lot of the most able/highly achieving kids I teach actually say they find English *harder* than those other subjects.

The US Army realised in 1941, as it spooled up for war, that it needed around 500,000 typewriters to function. so great was the need that they had to requisition and ration them. HALF A MILLION. Equivalent to 40% of the entire US domestic supply at the time. Logtics wins wars.

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

Traditionally as northern journalists (local or national, there’s not loads of us) it is infuriating to see stories about things you’ve covered in detail briefed to the Sunday lobby. Let’s see how this power shift works in practice
