Would love to write a book for children but I don’t think I have what it takes to be an actor.

Honestly given this and the photo of the Physics guy, if I ever won a Nobel Prize I would absolutely not want someone taking a photo of me. For various reasons.

The idea that radio shows only work on one platform is clesrly bullshit given how many BBC things are ending up on Spotify as podcasts!

Ahhh I have been waiting for the chat to begin! Really enjoyed this series (finished it across a week) despite a slightly different tone and pace. I can't think of a current drama which does better characterisation and character development.

My OH however works in an industry where time is built into the day for courses, classes, in house lectures. He finds it astonishing that we're expected to do all that *outside* our working hours.

I also think a byproduct of this would be better retention - most teachers love their subject and time spent working on that (meaningfully) is time well spent. I have been teaching a new spec this year - new texts and AOs. Pretty much all my work for it has been done at weekends or on holidays.

8/10 If we believe this, time becomes an uncomfortable question. Professional learning can't perpetually live in INSET days, twilight sessions & whatever remains. Protected professional learning isn't asking teachers to work more. It may require schools to deliberate on what we should do less of.

This was a lesson I got told in my teenage job - we could have offered some classes for free but the boss was adamant that people only care if they have paid a bit.

Reminded of writing about Cold Comfort Farm - a novel that is still read but the ones it parodies (looking at you Mary Webb) are utterly forgotten, despite being well known enough to parody in the first place!

Seems to be a development of the 90s/early 00s where people used to turn up with random things they'd been given by Lowry.

The extent of the PISA gap between England and other western European countries in particular is extraordinary In reading, the 25% most disadvantaged young people in England outperformed the average for all students in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway and many other countries

I usually hit around 40-50. I think for lots of people, it also definitely depends on the genre - I can easily read a popular fiction thing in a couple of days but Middlemarch took significantly longer!

I remember seeing on a US drama* that higher test scores = more money for the school and thinking that was absolute madness. *so I took it with a pinch of salt but I also think it was The Wire so probably accurate.

I also have a theory that parents' ability to WFH has affected things - not just that it's harder to say 'you need to go to school' but also children being shown that you don't need to go into the big social space and it seemingly being fine.

If it is this (I am not sure and I don't know how you woukd confirm the hypothesis) I would suspect it's less the gulf - which as you say has always exist - but the fact that culturally we've become obsessed with school as prep for work and money and nothing else.
