It's only appropriate to bring iced coffee for an afternoon zoom interview (hot coffee for morning ones, obvs). For in person interviews, it's a sign of submissionto bring your own (& you don't want to start a job on that note). Ideally, place your coffee order with the interviewer when you arrive

There's a lot that's wrong with this but putting Game of Thrones, a show that shat the bed so badly at the end that no one can talk about it without mentioning how bad the last season was, that many spots above Deadwood has made me mad enough that I didn't even keep reading down the list

Which is all to say, it would be nice if there were no issue with women being treated as an addendum to "real history" and i also want that, but i don't think we're there yet and there can be rhetorical use in a term that highlights that, etymology be damned
1110
Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Not suggesting that you are making this kind of claim, you're being far more measured, but also it's just much easier to (obnoxiously) excerpt myself than to rewrite this argument here. For context, this is from a chapter about the Daughters of Bilitis using a classical forgery in the 50s/60s
Classicists and pedants of all stripes are quick to point out that history does not derive from his-story, so replacing his with her is not etymologically sound. However, the term herstory forces the audience to grapple with the broader claim that the word herstory makes. Just because history does not derive from his-story does not mean that history has not generally been the study of stories about men. Despite any etymological failings, the use of herstory argues against an underlying reality about gender and the study of humanity.

Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Not disagreeing with any of that, and I used to HATE the use of herstory, but also I do have a piece coming out soon that includes a little aside on/defense of herstory as a concept and I feel somewhat obligated to speak up in its defense

that it's a special, unique job that people do for the love of the work, not the money, and money would just cheapen that whole special, beauitful kind of labor that doesn't count as "real labor"
020
Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
To be clear, this particular article doesn't seem to be well-intentioned and is romanticizing academic labor in a version of the same way that teaching gets treated at all levels. Namely...
110
Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
But whether the intentions are good or bad, it still comes to the same thing -- academics won't (or don't) engage in collective labor action, which only helps management divide and exploit labor.
120
Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
And like, my working conditions are admittedly much better than agricultural workers, and I do think that some of this impulse is well-intentioned academics feeling like associating themselves with "labor" is diminishing the ways that our conditions are better than some kinds of work.
110
Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
I do think a lot of it comes from real (maybe subconscious) elitism about what kind of labor is exploited and an idea that "unskilled" or "low-skill" labor is exploited but that intellectual work is somehow more noble and/or too smart to be exploited (as if that's how labor works)
110
Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
But I think that dovetails with a sense that unions are for "real labor" (read: blue collar jobs) and what we do is not that. Which is a fundamental category error that may result from understanding that our jobs are comfier and less physically demanding than something like manual labor BUT
110
Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
A lot of academics have, in my experience, managed to find a very tiny lane between "I support labors and unions (in THEORY, of course)" and "I don't think that I and people like me should unionize". I think some of it is cowardice/not wanting to rock the boat (or feel bad for not rocking the boat)

It’s important to be clear that the truth value of a subject does not become debatable just because somebody wants to debate. Ether. Wandering wombs. Devils in red heads, the cursed left handed. Flat earth. Phrenology. Humors. Race science. “Debate me bro!” It’s fine for the answer to be: no.

Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
But sure, a bunch of people who are varying degrees of cozy with eugenics and race science (Pinker, Krauss, Singer, the founder of Quillette) are just conveniently concerned about THIS instance of academic freedom, when the freedom to spew racism without consequences is threatened. Coincidences!

Amy Pistone @apistone.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
I'm just going to throw this out there, academic freedom isn't meant to protect things that have have been emperically disproved by a preponderance of actual evidence by actual scholars in the actual field. Would these people be equally mad if a flat earther were fired from a science department?
Abhishek Saha, professor of mathematics at Queen Mary University of London, who is among the signatories of the supportive letter, said those seeking Cofnas’ dismissal “misunderstands both philosophy and academic freedom” and that “academic freedom exists precisely to protect contentious, controversial and offensive work”. The American Association of Physical Anthropology in 2019 issued a statement rejecting “racial realism” as incompatible with the scientific evidence, while commentary published in the journal Philosophical Psychology described his work as belonging to “a group of ideas that insist on their legitimacy in spite of disproving empirical evidence”.
