Great first day at #CAMWS! We had a chance to check out a reception panel that was *chef's kiss*. Time to enjoy some amazing wine and Italian food at the nearby Napoli's. Come say hi!

I am very excited to be a part of this @antiquitymedia.bsky.social panel! It's the first time I'll be talking about popular reception in an academic setting instead of just on the @movieswedig.bsky.social podcast. Who else will be attending #CAMWS2025 this year? #Academicsky #AncientBluesky

For anyone wondering, some possible dog names have survived from cuneiform sources. On tiny dog figurines found buried under a palace in Nineveh, Iraq are inscriptions that seem to be names. dan rigiššu “loud is his bark” munaššiku gārîšu “biter of his foe” mušēṣi lemnūti “expeller of evil”
Photo of 5 dog figurines in profile facing to the left in a staggered line. The closest one is reddish, the three in the middle are beige, and the furthest is dark grey. Each one has a cuneiform inscription on their side.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since starting to talk #RealArchaeology online it’s that conservatives often do not know what science grants are. It is not surprising to me that Trump is targeting them, they are a bogeyman in conspiracy communities. 🧪🏺 Bright Insight Lied youtu.be/2GQ-6dg59xk

So @movieswedig.bsky.social completely summed up my problems with Gladiator II: 1, that the conclusion is a white hetero populist reclaiming kingship from queer and black usurpers through a speech of togetherness to an army, and 2, real Caracalla is fascinating and that's not him at all!!!

The findings, which used DNA from the plaster casts of people who died in the Mt. Vesuvius eruption two millennia ago, challenge the traditional gender and familial assumptions about the Pompeiians.
