I really do not enjoy social media in the last few months leading up to major elections. It's stressful and there isn't really a productive way I know to channel the stress of that uncertainty, except door knocking and other turnout work. And most Very Online Opinion Havers do not do that

Hegseth got the job not because of his clown antics on Fox News but because during the first term he made it his personal crusade to get Trump to pardon war criminals who had murdered civilians and desecrated corpses. That’s who he is and it’s what Trump hired him to be.

It is amazing, and sobering, to realize that had Trump not chosen to start this war for no good reason and against the advice of many of his senior ppl, Trump and the GOP would probably be doing... Ok. Not awesome, maybe losing the house, but ok.

"they really believe it"/"they will try to do it"/"the promises are real" are things that most americans refuse to believe about politicians but if you take them seriously will help you predict political behavior more often than not

people generally get causality reversed with political donations. it's not that politicians agree with PACs because the PACs support them, PACs support politicians *because those politicians have beliefs that agree with them*

“No they really believe it” is a way better heuristic for understanding political actors than “they are on the take” 9 times out of 10. Sometimes beliefs are downstream of materialism and political economy. But these relationships are more complicated than “bribes”

Was there something Biden could have threatened to get Netanyahu to back off (akin to Eisenhower's threat to demolish the Israeli economy in 1956)? Maybe, but I'm doubtful. Likewise, an Israel working with Russia or China wouldn't be better, just different.

In general there is an inability to recognize that parties to the Gaza war had agency & acted on it. One of the things the Atlantic article makes clear is that Hamas kept backing out of ceasefire agreements because Sinwar believed prolonging the war would drive a wedge in the US/Israeli alliance.

A thing that was very clear at the time is that while it’s true that the United States has a lot of leverage, Israel is a sovereign nation with its own politics, and Netanyahu was, in addition to leading a coalition of aspiring genocidaires, literally going to go prison if the war stopped

The anti-Biden people will never talk about this, and it is the single most obvious and clear sign that: 1. Trump was far worse in every way. 2. They have no idea what the fuck they’re talking about. They all checked out when Biden lost, because that’s what they cared about.

Ok so something that nearly always goes unmentioned by the “Biden was the worst” crowd is that the very first thing the Trump administration did - literally week one - was to work with Israel to bypass the UN system for aid distribution. This was priority number one for Trump.

It's good to point out these sorts of lame intimidation efforts. But it's also important to put the ineffectiveness in context. If the goal is to promote voting, flagging the structural limitations of federal threats should be part of that process.

Look, this is bad. Yes. But the Trump admin sent six (6) people to Maricopa and Pima. Where, by my count, there are 404 polling places, spread across 18,000 square miles (each county is ~9k sq mi). What they want is the FEAR to discourage the voting they can't actually prevent.
