I was startled today looking at reviews of 1980s productions of medieval drama to come across a photo of a young Mark Heap. Who knew he started out in a theatre troup run by his brother Carl Heap, specializing in medieval drama & pageantry?!

The book cover is solid black with a partial image of a medieval Arabic astrolabe, and the text reads Cambridge Elements: The Global Middle Ages. East Asian Medievalisms, Jonathan Hsy.

Today I learned a delightful fact about a 14th century English case in which two officious bailiffs tried to compel a man to enter into a service position under new labor laws, and the local vicar asked them what the hell they were doing and then excommunicated them.

It is bisexual visibility day! I am bisexual and while I usually prefer 'queer' as a label for a variety of reasons, bisexual visibility is important to me, not least because its invisibility to modern scholars has been used to erase the history of queer people!

I appreciate that my colleagues want me (on leave) to feel unobligated but the "WHY ARE YOU HERE?" reactions are beginning to make me self-conscious. Sorry I didn't get any other fellowships, I live in a tiny apartment, my wife works from home and coffee costs $14, where else am I supposed to work?!

Being on leave is great except my whole being resonates to the academic calendar, and my subconscious absolutely cannot figure out why I haven't done class prep and keeps treating me to dreams where e.g. I realize 30min before the Latin final that I haven't written the exam.

In conversation w/ minority scholars over the past days, we have asked ourselves what our university would do if the media storm comes for us. Would it even know where to begin? Would it make us do even more labour by asking us what action we require? Would it make backlash an impact case study?

I've been very interested in the turn in mainstream queer romance marked by Heated Rivalry; it's a narrative in which homophobia plays a big role but which nonetheless avoids subjecting audiences to it. There's no gaybashing, no slurs, and a happy ending is possible.

Remember, everyone. It is perfectly acceptable to fixate exclusively on the quantity and relative size of horse penises on display in the Bayeux Tapestry. The motif is, one could argue, the linchpin to its political argument.

It shouldn't be allowed for public institutions to offer positions requiring a PhD at this kind of salary in London. You could barely afford rent. If they can't afford to offer a liveable wage, they can't afford to hire.

I read Robert Jackson Bennett's The Tainted Cup last week and can highly recommend. Rex Stout-inspired sci-fi detective story with a very interesting world built on biohacking and environmental precarity. I have the sequel on hold and can't wait.

I keep boggling at this. The Westminster bubble does something to people’s minds. Was this really why you joined the Labour movement? Was this what moved you, when you were young, and you heard the word “equality”? Do you see what has happened, in that last sentence?

Should note, for accuracy's sake, that associate's an untenured rank here. Generally, a colleague comes up for promotion to assoc rank 4 years after their hiring. We do have 3 associate professors. That's it. No hiring authorized for next year. What will the future of lit studies be in these parts?

There are stories from all over about universities' dismantling of the humanities. I have a small but dismaying data point from my university to contribute to the discourse. Harvard University now has NO assistant professors of English. That's how long it has been since we were allowed to hire.
