So I was idly thinking that, if I ever get space, it would be nice to get a bandsaw and a pillar drill so I could make toys for our parrots. Then I thought about the absolute Fear of the bandsaw that school DT lessons instilled in me and it's just wild that I could just buy one, no questions asked

And further to this, there are ways to be accompanied (not represented) even if they say no: - English not your first language? Bring an interpreter just in case. - Feeling very stressed? Bring someone to support your 'wellbeing'. - Declared disability? A reasonable adjustment can be a note taker.

friends fear they've taken up another expensive hobby
About 20cm of garter stitch knitting still on a pair of circular needles. The knitting is actually fairly neat and regular with no dropped or extra stitches. The yarn is variegated with patches of dark blue, teal, peach and pink.

Goodnight sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest! (yes I have a spare pair, yes I am about to drop £500+ on lenses alone because my eyesight is fucked, no I can't order cheap lenses online because my lenses are very high powered & need a human to line up the lens with my pupil)
A pair of dramatically broken glasses. They have broken at the nose bridge. I have placed them lying flat and with one half above the other half.

The way AI is going to “kill everyone” is just by manufacturing consent for ever worse outcomes & conditions, like many governments do. It is a governing technology after all. And like bureaucracy it launders responsibility so the people & institutions who deploy it aren’t accountable for the harms

Thinking a lot about Jason Arday. Our time at Roehampton overlapped but I didn't meet him. However, I do know his former colleagues and they are deeply grieving. At the heart of this is a man - perhaps a flawed man, but a deeply human one. I don't want to lose sight of his humanity 1/

Watched the eclipse from Coniston Water! It was incredible - absolutely magical to watch the light dim, our shadows grow fainter and feel the air chill around us.
A fuzzy photo of a partial eclipse taken through eclipse glasses with a phone lol. Zoom in for a clearer view!Me standing and looking over the lake. I am a slim brown skinned person with short black hair. I am wearing rolled up trousers, a black t-shirt and cardboard eclipse glasses.Looking over the lake at the sun. Important for everyone in the UK as we go into a week of very high temperatures and humidity, but especially for trans and non-binary people who use binders: limit how many hours you bind, try to keep your skin as dry as possible, drink lots of water, and stay as cool as possible

3/3. Thinking specifically of that Independent piece designed to drive a wedge between disabled and trans people (ignore the massive intersection) - please don't fall for it. Don't mistake gladiatorial media framings for real world possibilities. The EHRC has repeatedly failed us both. Join forces.

2/3. Your agent gets a message that you've got a booking waiting for you - so long as you're happy to parrot the oppositional argument that the editorial team wants. It's a deliberate game designed to drive engagement, and there are always people happy to play the game for their own personal ends.

1/3. Reminder to anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of dealing with the UK press: there's going to be a lot of divide-and-conquer around new EHRC guidance, and that will be deliberately editorially driven. You get approached to write an article/spout a viewpoint along set oppositional lines.

New EHRC guidance is due today. Remember: ➡️ Early reports based on unattributed briefings are spin, not facts. ➡️ This is civil law around who can and cannot bring discrimination claims - not criminal law. ➡️ Whatever it says, it is a choice by this government. They can fix it. ➡️ We will keep going.

Went to the Crossness pumping station open day and was pleased at the range of nerd interests on offer. Victorian history! Civil engineering! Public health! Sewage treatment! Narrow gauge railways! Victorian architecture! Also a nice cafe for those who are inexplicably not into any of the above
A painted iron column with a white relief plaque and red, white and black polychromatic brickwork arch in the background. The column is painted red; the column capital is a design of green leaves and white dogwood flowers. The white plaque in the background has a similar design of carved dogwood flowers. A scalloped metal floor is just visible at the top of the photo.

If the BBC had focused its report on dodgy immigration advisors exploiting people seeking asylum and providing them with false information that would be one thing, and it is an issue which needs addressing. Instead they have framed this as people seeking asylum pretending to be LGBTQIA+ 5/

This reporting puts LGBTQIA+ as well as migrants' rights, groups at more risk of far-right attacks, undermines safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals, and makes it harder for LGBTQIA+ people seeking asylum, who already face significant barriers, to be recognised, all based on a handful of anecdotes 4/

Something that's changed a lot in Shillong is the sheer amount of tourism from the rest of India. The 7 Sisters have always been geographically, linguistically & culturally distinct. In Meghalaya, the Khasi, Jaintia & Garo tribes are matrilineal - property passes to Ka Khadduh, the youngest daughter
