Back in 2017 I co-organized an event collecting stories of sexual and gender-based misconduct and violence at Yale Divinity School. Several of the submitted stories concerned abusers being able to graduate without penalty etc. despite leadership knowing. Nothing changed. No one really cared.

It's remarkable (in a very good way) to see an elected member of the Democratic Party saying this. For decades, the Party has treated public higher education as a jobs training program, not a site for cultivating democratic habits of mind. I deeply hope that things are changing.

It’s almost as if there are more ways to measure the value of work than just the amount of money it makes people.

I just gave a lecture on the French and Haitian Revolutions and got to use this amazing 1948 painting by the Haitian artist Dieudonné Cedor depicting the 1791 Vodou gathering in the forest of Bois Caïman, the pivotal ceremony that ignited the revolution.
A priest dressed in bright scarlet robes stands at the center with arms outstretched upward, directing the ritual invocation.

On this day in 1737, the fraudulent "walk" of the Walking Purchase Treaty between the family of William Penn and the Lenape occurs. In 2006, a US court upheld that fraud, such as the 1737 walk, is a legitimate way to obtain lands from Indigenous people. anticolonialhistory.com/event/111/
In 1735, Swedish painter Gustavus Hesselius, who lived in Philadelphia, painted this portrait of Lenape chief Lapowinsa, showing his facial painting.
