Dreamed the BBC was producing an adaptation of @clpolk.com's Witchmark with Jonathan Bailey, and I woke up SO convinced it was real. Time to manifest *real* hard. 🤞

Somehow, you’ve ended up with a few spots of salt lichen, despite being a day’s travel from the coast. Fortunately, you spotted its glow and caught it early, and you set aside as much as you can in corked jars. You’ll make the trip in a few days, and set it free above the high-tide line.

A mirror breaks at midnight--a sure sign that some ghost has been mischief-ing about--and when you puzzle the shards back together, each piece shows a slightly different version of your face. In your reflections, you see all the lives you might have lived, all the paths you didn't take.

It takes a full afternoon to harvest enough seed fluff from the thistle field, and another three days to spin it with longer flax fibres, but at last you have a single skein of thistle thread. You tie it round your wrists, throat and waist--protection against the ravenous stories of the Yewfolk.

In the narrow cobbled alley there is a wooden crate, a door with peeling blue paint, and a green glass jar that glows faintly in the shadows. A rhyme may help you; a question certainly will not. The stones whisper impatiently, and you must choose which curiosity to open.

The shop is all honeyed wood and sun-soaked brick, with trailing vines of wisteria hanging over the front door. You’ve travelled two days to search its wall-to-wall shelves of thin glass vials, silently hoping that somewhere among the bottled salt spray and wind shards, you’ll find what you need.

Snuffling nose. Wagging tail. A haze of tawny fur as your eyes blur with tears. "How...?" Gideon rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. "We pooled the last of our hoards and talked to the Red Wizard. Turns out, longevity spells aren't all that difficult for dogs." He grins. "Welcome home."

Editing my sapphic fantasy. Needed just the right colour for the sickly yellow-green of nausea, but I can't use chartreuse, because I *know* I'm not the only one whose brain insists it's a brilliant pinky-purple. #editingproblems #writing

You're grateful it's raining, and use the drum of it on the roof as a subtle rhythm to the song you build under your breath. You lose yourself in it, startling when thunder cracks close overhead. A woman across the aisle grins and throws you a wink as delicate sparks fizz at the ends of her hair.

Absolutely howling at the Vatican doing a "I'm sorry did I fucking stutter" to the US ambassador to the Vatican to make it unambiguously clear that he's both 1) wrong and 2) not in Rome's good graces for casually blaspheming about the Pope while being wrong

I hadn't appreciated what C.L. Nolan meant by being able to know a feral church by its 'enfolding sense of green communion' until I entered one. Now I get it. Step into a feral church and there's a palpable sense of something profoundly old, profoundly untamed dwelling within. – #MattAdams, 1982

I’m ten pages into Honeysuckle by Bar Fridman-Tell and I’m already obsessed with this writing. “It lasted a moment, a heartbeat, the length of one bite into a hard apple…” “A tremble moved up her arms—a leaf shiver, a horse twitching its coat, there and gone.” I want to eat this book 👀

Like many authors awaiting their first chance to write acknowledgements, I mentally draft mine from time to time, and right there at the top of the list is eternal gratitude to my husband, who lovingly brings me actual meals while I'm being a distressed little revision goblin.

Today I learned these poison dart frogs—that can kill a human in seconds—are *only* dangerous if they feed on toxic mites and ants. If they're pampered frogs eating a curated diet of fruit flies, they're totally harmless, and thus you don't need to panic when they start hopping toward your feet.
A poison dart frog with robin’s-egg-blue speckled legs, and a black-yellowish-blue body, posing daintily in a sitting position on a rock. A gold and black poison frog sitting atop a leaf. The gold and black poison dart frog pressed up against a stone, seen through a screen of variegated leaves. Two poison dart frogs with their backs to the camera, while sitting on a log and a stone.

Today I've been thinking about Shakespearean insults. One of my favourites is "His wit’s as thick as a Tewkesbury mustard." "Thou damned and luxurious mountain goat" is also great 🐐 And "You have such a February face, so full of frost, of storm, and cloudiness" is oddly beautiful 🥶 #GloriousWords

A lovely @lindyryanwrites cover blurb! "Lush, haunting, and drenched in fairy-tale dread, Fitcher’s Bird is folk horror at its finest. Slatter weaves trauma, sisterhood, and folklore into something both deeply human and deliciously monstrous—proving yet again that she is a mistress of the genre." 💙

First, lemon balm and lavender for the bees. Their scents linger in the hidden corners of the garden with swirls of green and blue, colour filling the air like sun through stained glass. You try poppies next, and swathes of brilliant orange streak toward the sky. Apples blossom softly pink, radiant.

Drove myself into the ground over the last month to finish the draft of my sapphic fantasy, and was quietly judged the entire time that my lap was occupied by my computer instead of cat.
