Autumn in the Netherlands might come earlier than normal because the drought. There are already some yellow trees outside. It's one of my favourite seasons. Yellow trees, and mushrooms.

I much prefer doing my research amidst the flickering lanterns of an old-fashioned library in Prague during a raging thunderstorm with the help of a library ghost, so no, I'm afraid I have no interest in "asking ChatGPT."

The edge between a walled and wild section of wood always feels like a magical threshold. A transgressive possibility space where things leak out and shinning up the border requires a sacrifice of scraped skin, torn cloth. To walk atop such a wall is to be of two-worlds. – #DAKilroy, 1982

The last winds of summer have started, and they swell with the intensity of a beating drum, thrumming deep into bone and earth, throwing heat like a pyre. Now are the nights of wild music and frenzied dance. Now are the nights when feather meets flame, and secrets take flight.

Thornstrife is a real problem. It was imported from the continent 300 yrs ago for decoration, but we don't have the megafauna to keep it under control here. It can tangle up anything smaller than a cat and feed it into its rhizome network to self-fertilize. Awful stuff. Admittedly pretty, though.

Somehow, you’ve ended up with a few spots of salt lichen, despite being a day’s travel from the coast. Fortunately, you spotted its glow and caught it early, and you set aside as much as you can in corked jars. You’ll make the trip in a few days, and set it free above the high-tide line.

Folks abandoned Holstown at the first sign of haunting, and despair quickly crept in. Cracked roads, weeping wells and wailing shadows. But since you started patching holes and bringing lanterns to the darkest corners, a small, sweet voice sings sometimes. And tonight it sighed, “it’s been so dark.”

A mirror breaks at midnight--a sure sign that some ghost has been mischief-ing about--and when you puzzle the shards back together, each piece shows a slightly different version of your face. In your reflections, you see all the lives you might have lived, all the paths you didn't take.

It takes a full afternoon to harvest enough seed fluff from the thistle field, and another three days to spin it with longer flax fibres, but at last you have a single skein of thistle thread. You tie it round your wrists, throat and waist--protection against the ravenous stories of the Yewfolk.

The shop is all honeyed wood and sun-soaked brick, with trailing vines of wisteria hanging over the front door. You’ve travelled two days to search its wall-to-wall shelves of thin glass vials, silently hoping that somewhere among the bottled salt spray and wind shards, you’ll find what you need.

In the narrow cobbled alley there is a wooden crate, a door with peeling blue paint, and a green glass jar that glows faintly in the shadows. A rhyme may help you; a question certainly will not. The stones whisper impatiently, and you must choose which curiosity to open.

For #SmallPoemSunday, thanks to @tomsnarsky.bsky.social, and dedicating this one to Spokane and all the other fire-struck lands, this poem is in *Becoming Altar*. Here's "Waterfeet":
Waterfeet

I want waterfeet
to walk this burning world
(where are the frogs?)

marshes seethe,
sedges grasses forbs blaze up,
tall forests fall to fiery ground
birds drop sizzling from seared horizons
(where went the fishes, the cool mosses?)

mouth wind-blistered
skin spark-stung I watch
as streams crackle and steam....

where are the frogs?
-- the frogs who call
the rain --
they are burning.

with little hope
I pray over my bluest socks
all night long and in the morning
put them on
still wet with prayer
and start walking.

You step inside, the ground giving softly beneath your boots. A cerulean rainbow of light scatters over you, and you peer closer at your arm, where the blue-green light—the perfect sea glass shade—illuminates a patch of finely layered scales. You peer out through the window and see a forest of kelp.

Snuffling nose. Wagging tail. A haze of tawny fur as your eyes blur with tears. "How...?" Gideon rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. "We pooled the last of our hoards and talked to the Red Wizard. Turns out, longevity spells aren't all that difficult for dogs." He grins. "Welcome home."

You're grateful it's raining, and use the drum of it on the roof as a subtle rhythm to the song you build under your breath. You lose yourself in it, startling when thunder cracks close overhead. A woman across the aisle grins and throws you a wink as delicate sparks fizz at the ends of her hair.

Celebrate your differences. If you have weird antlers, an extra tentacle or two, or a third eye where no one should have an eye at all, don't hide it. Show the world your true dark beauty.

First, lemon balm and lavender for the bees. Their scents linger in the hidden corners of the garden with swirls of green and blue, colour filling the air like sun through stained glass. You try poppies next, and swathes of brilliant orange streak toward the sky. Apples blossom softly pink, radiant.

A young mother is reaching out to her own, with good news. The little one, barely a century old and still nursing, is shy; her song still too small to reach across many light-years. But with a little gentle encouragement from her mother, she manages a soft greeting to her deeply proud grandmother.

Far beyond the trodden roads, beyond even the narrow trails cut into the mountainside by the shaggy-haired goats, is a long and narrow field of wildflowers that follows the curve of the slope, where lightning crackles among the blooms, patient as a spider in its web.

You take in a bag of wool to wash and card for a neighbour, who offers in payment anything you find in the fibres. You humour them—the feel of wool in warm water has always soothed you—but then you find a few strands coloured brilliant violet, tangled around a silver charm of a curling ram’s horn.

Three days of clear skies is enough to dry up the muddy road, and so you head into town, your handcart laden with spice mixes, sheafs of pressed paper, and a few small brooms. And of all the things you trade for—necessities and the few indulgences—the jar of fresh bitter greens is your most prized.

I walked the woods, by the old railroad trail, when last I visited. Echoes of old engines, of metal wheels singing on metal rails, of the thump of the hammers that drove the spikes that held the rails to the ties rang in my ears. That was home, not the house I slept in, not the people who shared it.

You wear the talismans of your heart like armour, trusting in them to keep you grounded: -a long skirt embroidered with spiderwebs and daffodils, sewn in summer sun -a small river stone pendant that whispers stories of movement and change -the memory of a kiss, from the one who loves you as you are

To the east is a series of ponds where the water is always perfectly still, no matter the wind or weather. Folk steer clear, mostly, but last solstice you crept close, following a story you’d heard from the starlings, and in the wee dark hours saw a different sky of stars reflected in each one.

The stairs are worn smooth down the centre, rough stone inlaid with spiderwebbing lines of quartz that catch and carry the light from the surface. You count sixteen silent steps down, and trail a careful hand along the rounded earthen ceiling. At the bottom, a curved room—empty of all but echoes.

The first few raindrops land with audible clicks, like small jaws snapping shut. You rush inside to throw open every window in your cottage and watch as an undulating wave of birds heralds the coming of the storm. They screech inside, fighting and frantic, as the fanged rains descend.
