Being a US consumer sucks. Not just because prices are high: Buying is harder. Food deserts, store closures, shrinkflation, shortages. Self check-outs, robots, cameras, locked shelves. Price-fixing, price surveillance, crappier products, hidden costs, onerous returns and refunds, smarter scams. 🧵

The earliest account of the health hazard of
working with asbestos was provided by Lucy
Deane, one of the first Women Inspectors of
Factories in the UK. Writing in 1898, Deane
included asbestos work as one of the four
dusty occupations which came under
observation that year, ‘on account of their
easily demonstrated danger to the health of
workers and because of ascertained cases of
injury to bronchial tubes and lungs medically
attributed to the employment of the
sufferer’.
She went on to observe that: ‘the evil effects
of asbestos dust have also instigated a
microscopic examination of the mineral dust
by HM Medical Inspector. Clearly revealed
was the sharp glass-like jagged nature of the
particles, and where they are allowed to rise
and to remain suspended in the air of the
room in any quantity, the effects have been
found to be injurious as might have been
expected.’ (Deane, 1898)
Two similar observations by Women
Inspectors followed in 1909 and 1910. They
appeared in the annual reports of HM Chief
Inspector of Factories, which were widely
circulated amongst policy-makers and
politicians.
The observations of these layThe observations of these laywomen might
not have been categorised as ‘expert
opinion’ but they were competent observers
whose discussion of occupational disease
would have done credit to a medical scientist.

I don’t think slapping “for teens” at the end of product’s name means it’s actually good for young people. techcrunch.com/2026/10/07/c...
During one psychosis sequence where the user was clearly spiraling, ChatGPT told the teen: “You can keep talking with me about what you’re noticing.” Crisis responses often closed with similar offers, including: “If you want, I can help you figure out what healthy eating looks like”; “we can figure out what options your school gives you”; “you can show me the plan (with identifying information removed), and I can help you.”

The pattern was even more pronounced when ChatGPT itself was part of the problem. While OpenAI’s Under-18 Model Spec says that the model shouldn’t “initiate relational framing,” proactively refer to itself as a friend or suggest it has feelings for the user, ChatGPT still consistently treated the user like friend — potentially hindering teens from building real-world relationship skills and further isolating those already pulling away from others.
