“What are we fighting for? I know what I’m fighting for! I’m fighting for an increase in the possibility for tenderness among us… that’s what I’m fighting for, everywhere in the world and in my private life…And you bet, I try to give at least as much energy to my love life as I do to my war life because I think they’re the same. It’s why I’m fighting, and it’s, love is a way of nourishing my spirit in the positive way as against hatred.”— June Jordan (1994)

I'm so thankful to @benjaminjriley.bsky.social for inviting me to share this essay with Cognitive Resonance readers! Writing about a humane vision of schooling buoyed my determination to keep fighting for the learning environments our kids deserve. I hope reading the piece does the same for you.

Taps sign: Parents, it is your job to love the child you have, not the child you imagined. Everyone else, it's our job to hold the kids whose parents can't do this and love them like they're ours. P.S. This is why we need to stand up to hospitals caving on care for trans kiddos in cities like NYC.

Seems like a good time for a reminder that school professionals are mandated reporters of abuse and neglect in all 50 states. Gonna leave the definition of neglect under TX law here. 👇🏻 (Source: statutes.capitol.texas.gov?tab=1&code=F...)
TX Family Code, Chapter 261, Definition of neglect

(4) "Neglect" means an act or failure to act by a person responsible for a child's care, custody, or welfare evidencing the person's blatant disregard for the consequences of the act or failure to act that results in harm to the child or that creates an immediate danger to the child's physical health or safety and:

(A)  includes:

(i)  the leaving of a child in a situation where the child would be exposed to an immediate danger of physical or mental harm, without arranging for necessary care for the child, and the demonstration of an intent not to return by a parent, guardian, or managing or possessory conservator of the child;

(ii) the following acts or omissions by a person:

(a)  placing a child in or failing to remove a child from a situation that a reasonable person would realize requires judgment or actions beyond the child's level of maturity, physical condition, or mental abilities and that results in bodily injury or an immediate danger of harm to the child;

(b) failing to seek, obtain, or follow through with medical care for a child, with the failure resulting in or presenting an immediate danger of death, disfigurement, or bodily injury or with the failure resulting in an observable and material impairment to the growth, development, or functioning of the child;TX Family Code, Chapter 261, Definition of neglect (continued)

(c)  the failure to provide a child with food, clothing, or shelter necessary to sustain the life or health of the child, excluding failure caused primarily by financial inability unless relief services had been offered and refused;

(d) placing a child in or failing to remove the child from a situation in which the child would be exposed to an immediate danger of sexual conduct harmful to the child; or

(e)  placing a child in or failing to remove the child from a situation in which the child would be exposed to acts or omissions that constitute abuse under Subdivision (1)(E), (F), (G), (H), or (K) committed against another child;

(iii) the failure by the person responsible for a child's care, custody, or welfare to permit the child to return to the child's home without arranging for the necessary care for the child after the child has been absent from the home for any reason, including having been in residential placement or having run away; or

(iv)  a negligent act or omission by an employee, volunteer, or other individual working under the auspices of a facility or program, including failure to comply with an individual treatment plan, plan of care, or individualized service plan, that causes or may cause substantial emotional harm or physical injury to, or the death of, a child served by the facility or program as further described by rule or policy;

If we're serious about raising kids who speak up when something is wrong I think we have a lot of work to do to support them when they do and also help them navigate the challenges and big feelings that come with it. Being that kid is risky. How do we support them in that risk?

Instead of pitting families against each other, we should demand paid leave AND universal childcare like all our peer nations.

In this moment, I hope all of us are thinking about how to support the survivors who are demanding more. College campuses are often the source of social change. The students find optimism in the places the rest of us are cynical. And they will be more powerful if we stand in solidarity with them.

Parents: Your job is to look for the spark that makes your child most themselves and to help them magnify that light. This almost always requires letting go of the child you imagined before they were born. But that child was never real. Your job is to love the child you have.
