Who's going to #4S? I'm presenting the latest from a project w/ @alliethrall.bsky.social and Tony Talbert that's exploring how, why, and to what ends parents and caregivers are challenging Big Tech in schools. We'll highlight the forms of labor - mostly undertaken by mothers - in this struggle.
The working title slide from our presentation. The presentation is titled, "Parents, Caregivers, and a Growing Resistance to TechnoPower in Schools". The title also includes the following text: "Dr. Charles Logan, Binghamton University (SUNY). Alexandra Thrall, Baylor University. Dr. Tony Talbert, Baylor University. October 10, 2026. Toronto, Canada. Society for Social Studies of Science." Next to the text is a photograph taken by Greg Pak during a protest organized by the AI Moratorium coalition in NYC. The photo shows a woman holding a child in one arm while raising her other hand. The woman appears to be speaking passionately. Behind the woman is another woman holding a homemade sign that reads, "Keep AI Out of Our Schools".

As an elementary teacher, read alouds were one of my favorite times of the day. The first time I went into an elementary classroom and saw students sitting on the carpet, huddled around the Promethean board, watching a read aloud on YouTube, I was startled.

Truth be told, I want to see studies that look into these emotional burdens more! It seems like with AI we’ve put emerging teachers in a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t position, that isn’t super relatable for me as a seasoned teacher who feels comfortable articulating my refusal.
