we fucking loved it, even when there was basically nothing on it, and let me tell you something else: we loved it because of human connection, human diversity, human creativity. WE DON'T NEED A SINGLE THING ANY OF THESE COMEMIERDAS HAVE MADE AND TRIED TO SELL US IN ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT INTERNET.

Right. And there is (I have found!) a certain amount of art to creating and maintaining strictly informational handoff/changelog docs so it's easier to return to something later

I can't say it's turning out pristine code, I would have no way to tell. But for private tools I have been more taken with it than I expected to be. (I'm making stuff with an open-weight model using open-source code and graphics, I am trying to do this "ethically" to the extent that it can be?)

I have been running a model locally (no datacenters, no cloud) for some light coding work to build tools to solve minor small-business administrative headaches for a month or so and it has been genuinely useful there, as a non-coder who loathes it in a creative context.

the funniest thing about the "we don't trust the media" people is that they will trust literally anyone else. like, if you have an image and text, they'll buy it. shaking keys at babies type logic.

I think what has become more and more clear is that there’s an elite group of rich people and media members that never interact with normal people in normal ways and spend all day messaging each other about how other people are elitists who don’t see what normal people are thinking

I saw a man on a train in a full business suit finishing a foamy Starbucks drink. He slurped the bottom with the straw, then he used the straw to scoop foam bits into his mouth, then he methodically ran his finger around the entire inside of the cup so he could lick the flavor off. It was 3pm.

the Male-Grievance Grift-o Sphere going after popular stuff might seem like a tactical error at first but it's designed to put vulnerable/stupid men into a siege mentality by making it seem like all of pop culture is out to get them. it's an attempt to isolate

my jr high pre-algebra teacher called improper fractions "Dolly Parton fractions" because they "had big ones on top." We can debate the appropriateness of this but i *do* still remember what improper fractions are.

Dolly Parton, among a thousand other amazing things she did in her life, gifted over 330 million books to kids through her Imagination Library program. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the world, but you can support the program today to keep it going imaginationlibrary.com

I maintain that most of the problem with this is the 10 episode season, it’s fine to do “the muppet episode” when it’s one of 22 eps but when it’s one of 10 you’re always sort of wondering “what perfectly good Regular Episode ideas did they pass on so they could do this muppet thing”

I’m still on board with Strange New Worlds but it has been weird to see it morph from “classicist Star Trek” to an almost Community-esque “A THEMED GIMMICK FOR EVERY EPISODE” show

Though you may not support the sites on account of how they’re all terrible now, important to know Screenrant, Collider, CBR, Polygon, and other companies all deteriorated because they were bought out by Valnet, a truly heinous company started by shitbags.

to describe "the median 26 year old's apartment" as "grandpa core" is hilarious

they put "house hang" in quotes! they describe having a couch as "grandpa core"! they find a way to sort of imply that people are doing this because Mamdani hasn't done enough to lower the cost of living! truly it has a little of everything
NYT text: "Budget-conscious New Yorkers say they are cutting back on socializing and are pivoting to cheaper activities, like Ms. Dunlop’s “house hang,” and making calculated decisions about which events are worth the expense."NYT text: "Back in Inwood, Ms. Dunlop and Mr. Lamberti set up the card game, explaining the rules to Ms. Rodriguez, who was still learning how to play.

Their one-bedroom apartment offered a cozy respite from their typical outdoor haunts. Decorated in what Mr. Lamberti described as “grandpa core,” the living room featured a nubby blue-and-brown plaid couch and matching armchair, model ships and a vintage bread box. A cabinet from Goodwill housed wine and spirits, and on the door, they had posted recipes for cocktails, including the corpse reviver.

“We chose to go out of our way to figure out how to have a welcoming space,” Ms. Dunlop said. A space that “would feel just as fun as going out to the bar.”"NYT text: "One of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s campaign promises was to make New York more affordable, and some of his recent initiatives have aimed to ease the cost of socializing. He invited parents to drop off their kids for one night in August at a New York recreation center and enjoy four hours to themselves. And in May, he promoted a World Cup $26 drink-and-meal special for city residents."

I know people are tired and overworked, but I feel like oftentimes they’re offloading a creative (and, on some level, rewarding) activity to free up time that they’ll ultimately spend scrolling on their phones—thereby further reducing their brains to mush. it’s a vicious cycle of meaninglessness
