they put "house hang" in quotes! they describe having a couch as "grandpa core"! they find a way to sort of imply that people are doing this because Mamdani hasn't done enough to lower the cost of living! truly it has a little of everything
NYT text: "Budget-conscious New Yorkers say they are cutting back on socializing and are pivoting to cheaper activities, like Ms. Dunlop’s “house hang,” and making calculated decisions about which events are worth the expense."NYT text: "Back in Inwood, Ms. Dunlop and Mr. Lamberti set up the card game, explaining the rules to Ms. Rodriguez, who was still learning how to play.

Their one-bedroom apartment offered a cozy respite from their typical outdoor haunts. Decorated in what Mr. Lamberti described as “grandpa core,” the living room featured a nubby blue-and-brown plaid couch and matching armchair, model ships and a vintage bread box. A cabinet from Goodwill housed wine and spirits, and on the door, they had posted recipes for cocktails, including the corpse reviver.

“We chose to go out of our way to figure out how to have a welcoming space,” Ms. Dunlop said. A space that “would feel just as fun as going out to the bar.”"NYT text: "One of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s campaign promises was to make New York more affordable, and some of his recent initiatives have aimed to ease the cost of socializing. He invited parents to drop off their kids for one night in August at a New York recreation center and enjoy four hours to themselves. And in May, he promoted a World Cup $26 drink-and-meal special for city residents."

the series that you are trying to make "time-agnostic" is about a group of teens who gather twice a week around a land-line phone. Most plot points revolve around adults being fully unreachable once they have left the house.
Quote from New York Times piece about updating old books for new editions: "At Scholastic, repackaging efforts for “The Baby-Sitters Club” are guided by one principle: keeping the books “time-agnostic.”

“It’s a phrase we use all the time,” Levithan said. The goal, he added, is “to find language that feels clear to today’s reader without suddenly putting iPhones into 1986.”

In the updated editions, a character “watches a movie” instead of putting a tape into a VCR, or “finds a phone number” instead of looking it up in a phone book, as in this example from “Baby-Sitters’ Winter Vacation”:

1989: “If you need music for your number, just hand her your tape before you go onstage and she’ll put it in the tape deck.”

2023: “If you need music for your number, just tell her your song before you go onstage and she’ll play it.”

For Levithan, this approach is central to how the books continue to resonate with readers.

“A whole new generation picked them up because they didn’t see them as a nostalgia buy, like something that belonged to their parents,” he said. “They saw them as something speaking directly to them.”"

I keep thinking about how they modernized this book from 2002 by adding a PlayStation, which by 2002 had already existed and been extremely popular for like seven years. If the goal is to hide "the adult behind the book," some of this "how do you do, fellow kids?" shit cuts the opposite way
Quote from New York Times piece about updating old books with modern references.

"Anthony Horowitz, author of the “Alex Rider” spy novels, said he had “absolutely no compunction whatsoever” about updating his books, the way he did here in “Stormbreaker,” the first book in the series:

2002: “Alex killed a couple of hours knocking a few balls around on his uncle’s snooker table — and then felt vaguely guilty when Jack caught him at it.”

2015: “Alex killed a couple of hours in the evening playing his Playstation — and then felt vaguely guilty when Jack caught him at it.”

For each new edition, Horowitz meets with his publisher to remove details he thinks date the books, like compact discs or cellphones with long antennae. He described these as “miniature hand grenades thrown in your path as you’re trying to make your way across the landscape of the story.”"

have you considered that he's from a very old and important political family and you should count yourself lucky to have him
New York Times piece about Tom Kean Jr.: "Mr. Kean is more than just a momentarily missing congressman. He is the scion of a political family that once helped to run a major New Jersey utility company and can trace its lineage to three of the country’s founding fathers. His great-grandfather was a U.S. senator and his grandfather served in the House. His father was a popular governor who in the 1980s waged an effort to overhaul New Jersey’s image. Years later, his leadership of the 9/11 commission burnished the family’s reputation as G.O.P. centrists keen on bipartisanship whose name adorns a university in North Jersey.

“He helped define the state in a more positive way,” Ross K. Baker, a Rutgers University political science professor, said of the former governor. “It was known as a down-and-dirty place. He added a certain amount of grace to politics in New Jersey.”"

this is what you'd say if you invited your boss to join you in your cellar for a cask of amontillado www.nytimes.com/2026/05/14/n...
NYT article about the absence of NJ Republican congressman Tom Kean Jr: "Members of Mr. Kean’s team were seated conspicuously in the third row, watching as the Democrats took turns weighing in on their boss’s mysterious absence. Afterward, his chief of staff, Dan Scharfenberger, reiterated a now familiar explanation.

“He’s dealing with a personal heath condition, and he’ll be back soon,” Mr. Scharfenberger said in an interview.

When pressed on the nature of the health condition and why Mr. Kean had not been seen in New Jersey or in Washington, Mr. Scharfenberger said, “There’s no cameras where Tom is.”

He declined to elaborate."

I don't really fully buy their password-vs-PIN logic here, at least not for passwords protecting a local account. But I think the technical answer is that the PIN is TPM-encrypted/tied into Windows Hello and they want to use Windows Hello for authentication for a bunch of other stuff
Microsoft support page: "Is a Windows Hello PIN safer than a password?
Yes, a Windows Hello PIN is safer than a password. The PIN is bound to the device so hackers cannot steal it and sign in to your account from a remote device. A Windows Hello PIN can be complex and use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. A Windows Hello PIN is backed by a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip, which is a secure crypto processor that is designed to carry out cryptographic operations. The chip includes multiple physical security mechanisms to make it tamper resistant, and malicious software is unable to tamper with the security functions of the TPM. Windows doesn't link local passwords to the TPM, therefore PINs are considered more secure than local passwords."

the first season of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017 had this bizarre fascination with Elon - one character put him in a List Of Three Guys with the Wright Brothers and the inventor of faster-than-light travel, another person went to "Musk Junior High" - and those predictions are starting to feel grim
Gabriel Lorca from Star Trek Discovery lists Elon Musk in a list of great inventors with the Wright Brothers and Zefram Cochrane, the fictional creator of warp drive. Yes I KNOW that this character was secretly from the Evil Mirror Universe, but the writers of the show obviously did not intend it as a winking reference!! a reference to "Musk Junior High" from Star Trek Discovery

the Mario wiki says it’s because they were both loudmouths, which, ok?? Seems like the names were the job of one 80s guy who just got to have fun with it without a lot of oversight, which makes it kind of funny that modern Nintendo has stuck with them
quote from Mario wiki: “ Morton was named after American talk show host, Morton Downey Jr.. This name was chosen because Morton "looked like a loudmouth" much like Downey. [6] While this is his name origin, it does not provide an in-universe explanation for the Jr. part of his name.”Kotaku quote about naming the Koopalings in Super Mario Bros 3: “ The hairstyle on one of them reminded me of Ludwig von Beethoven for some reason and Ludwig von Koopa was born. Next was the one with the glasses—that has to be Roy Koopa in homage to Roy Orbison, who almost always wore glasses. Then Wendy O. Koopa (Wendy O. Williams) [and] Iggy Koopa (Iggy Pop). One looked like a loudmouth, so he was Morton Koopa Jr. from [the] loud-mouthed talk show host Morton Downey Jr. And then there was Larry. There’s no real-world equivalent—he’s not Larry Mullen Jr. from U2 or Larry King—he just looked like a Larry.

That brings us to Lemmy. In addition to being a great name, it’s perfect for a video game character. This Koopaling struck me as being the kind of character who would do his own thing, no matter what anyone else thought. I think it was those crazy eyes. Lemmy Koopa was in the crew.””

last night for a small NYE party I made Very Good Pizza (prosciutto/arugula/shallot/parmesan and a few other things), may its memory be a blessing
Homemade pizza: olive oil mixed with minced garlic as the base, topped with freshly grated mozzarella and a few blobs of ricotta, baked on pizza stone for ~6 mins at 525. Mix arugula with thinly sliced shallot and olive oil (add lemon juice if you want), spread on top of baked pizza. Top with prosciutto and fresh Parmesan. Probably went a hair overboard with the Parmesan here but nobody complained
