One of the main reasons that WSDOT isn't in the passenger ferry business anymore is Tim Eyman. Prior to I-695, WSDOT did operate foot ferries in the 1990s. Then budget cuts forced the legislature to decide what its real priorities were (shockingly: cars).

It's time for a commercial kitchen bill of rights, protecting cooks and chefs from toxic gas and heat. Good food makes a great city and these hard-working people deserve protection.

I have been thinking a lot about an "essential vehicles only" designation as a solution to many of the thorny political issues around safer streets.

Listen: I don’t want to minimize the danger of high e-bike speeds. But if the problem here is that stores sell e-bikes that can drive faster than legal limits, then where’s the story about how literally *every car dealership has been doing the same thing for decades*?!?

I know several people who have died due to cars and others grievously injured. The fact that our leaders don't move immediately to stop the next crash is morally baffling.

I hope the business community takes the time to give the Mayor credit for this win. She is clearly being held to a different standard than other Mayors were/would have been, and this is exactly the kind of budget speech that would receive rave reviews if delivered by a Mayor from another faction.

New study suggests that a shortage of secure bike parking is limiting e-bike adoption. Glad to see this issue getting attention. It's intuitive that people with quasi-secure bike storage might be OK risking a pedal bike, but not an e-bike that's more expensive. doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

I wish there was a way that Seattle residents could "self-daylight" the intersection by their house, maybe with a pre-approved planter or something like that.

Wes Andrews @andrews-dot-energy.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
Beautiful! I sure hope the daylighting contains a solid object, or else delivery vans will just abuse them! As you can see, dear @mayor.seattle.gov, on 14th on Capitol Hill the amazon vans treat daylighting as though it were reserved parking.

Improving intersection visibility (or "hardened daylighting" if you want) is a proven safety upgrade. Let's make them the default across the city!

Parking within 30’ of a 🛑 sign or 20’ of any intersection is illegal because it’s dangerous: it blocks visibility for people walking across and drivers trying to turn or get out into traffic. No Parking signs aren’t enough. Intersections need physical barriers to keep cars from blocking visibility
Don’t park within 30’ of stop sign or 20’ from any intersection Car parked about six feet away from a stop sign on top of markings for a future bike corral
