Happy weekend www.openmarketsinstitute.org/publications...
Speculative data center debt is being repackaged and sold to pension and retirement funds, university endowments, and other institutional investors in a manner eerily reminiscent of the subprime bubble. Private equity firms have purchased life insurers and loaded them with risky debt, exposing policyholders and the public to losses and raising the threat of financial contagion.

"shouldn't be this hard" is an all-encompassing, feel-it-in-your-bones summary of modern American life -- of difficulties big and small, existential and annoying -- that should be at the core of every Democratic candidate's message for years to come.

Project 2025 aimed to localize power within the executive branch. Ambassadors of Christian nationalism fully support this goal. Well over half believe the President has the right amount of power (right now), and another 15% believe he should have more.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

That's the question! We'd have to talk to them to know, but given anecdotal evidence and interviews with folks like this elsewhere, my hunch is they are afraid "the other side" is doing this and will do this to harm them. It's kind of a "they're obvs doing it too!" stance.

Prague used to have a massive monument to Stalin. This is what happened to it. prague-now.com/history/stal...
The Destruction of the Stalin Monument
The monument was unveiled on 1 May, 1955, two years after Stalin’s death. It was a bold demonstration of loyalty to Moscow. The new Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev was conspicuously absent at the ceremony, but this hint was not immediately recognized. During the twentieth party congress in 1956, Khrushchev accused his predecessor of mass murder. Stalin fell into disgrace for abuse of power and the statue became an eyesore to the Czechoslovak communist party. The monument was also embarrassing for Moscow and it was decided that it had to be removed. In 1962, the Stalin Monument was blown up with 800 kilos of explosives. Only the plinth remained where the metronome has been nodding back and forth since 1991. Next to the metronome are two large bowls, remnants of the Stalin monument, which give an impression of the huge size of the monument.

Timely new paper in @socioeconreview.bsky.social: Does rising wealth concentration undermine American democracy? Using variation across the 50 U.S. states, results reveal a clear, negative effect of millionaire wealth concentration on democratic performance. doi.org/10.1093/ser/mwag058
Wealth concentration in the United States has reached heights not seen since the Gilded Age, renewing fears that concentrated economic power may undermine democracy. Yet empirical research linking inequality to democratic erosion remains inconclusive, partly because most studies focus on cross-country comparison and examine income rather than wealth. This study exploits variation across fifty U.S. states; each
embedded in a common federal framework but differing in political and economic dynamics. To estimate the exogenous effect of rising wealth concentration on democratic backsliding, I develop a shift-share instrument of state-level millionaire wealth shares. Results reveal a clear, negative effect on democratic performance. Causal mediation analysis demonstrates that the effect is mediated by the share of seats held by
Republicans in state legislatures, pointing to a mechanism of elite influence through partisan channels. These findings demonstrate that subnational wealth disparities, and their convergence with partisan politics, actively erode American democratic institutions.
