A female European mantis (Mantis religiosa) on the siding of my house, looking at me with her large compound eyes. That’s actually a pseudopupil, which is an optical illusion, seen as the black spot looking back. They can turn their heads, 180°. They have 3-D vision that can detect motion against the background to help them locate prey.

Our dramatic black-and-white photograph captures the shoreline of a lake at Glendalough in County Wicklow, Ireland, surrounded by steep, rugged mountains.

The lake stretches from the foreground towards a narrow valley in the distance. Its surface is gently rippled, reflecting the muted light of the overcast sky.

Several dark silhouettes of ducks swim close to the shoreline, their movements creating delicate trails across the water.

The immediate shoreline is dark and textured, with wet sand and small stones curving gently into the lake.

Dating back to the 14th century, this area served as Bamberg's central river harbor along the Regnitz River.
In 1156, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa granted the city the Stapelrecht (staple right). This law mandated that all passing merchant vessels stop for three days and offer their goods for sale to local citizens, significantly boosting Bamberg's trade and economic importance.
The Cranes were built around 1850, these mechanical cast-iron cranes were used to load and unload cargo from barges right up until 1912.

This image shows a bright yellow mushroom, probably an amanita of some sort, growing among decaying leaves, wood chips, and branches. The mushroom rises from the forest floor about a third of the way from the bottom of the frame, and a little right of center. We have a lovely view of its rough white stalk and striking yellow cap with jagged white protrusions sticking out of it. At the very top of the mushroom the cap becomes blushed with red. A brown oak leaf sits at the base of the stalk, running over to the left border of the image. The image is otherwise filled with reddish brown wood chips, and dark brown twigs, and is finished by bluish-black patches where the morning light reflects off their damp surfaces.
