After years of waiting, TU Delft is finally on the (tram) map. Yesterday, tram 19 reached the campus, and what a multimodal scene: trams, cycling, walking and green—all sharing the same car-free corridor. This is what a well-connected university looks like: making the right choice the easy choice.
A red and white tram passes cyclists riding on a protected bike lane with green space in between along a car-free corridor on the TU Delft campus.

Active transportation makes a neighborhood completely frictionless. You can stop anywhere without having to manage the speed, size, and storage of a multi-ton car. See an event board you want to read or a storefront that catches your eye? You just put your foot down.

Your regular reminder that there ISN’T a “war on cars.” Any objective observation in most cities however, would conclude that for 60+ years there’s been a war on every mobility choice EXCEPT cars. And that’s been bad for EVERYONE, including drivers. Poster via @urbantruth.bsky.social. #UrbanTruth

Both are city vehicles, but... Only one demands minimal space, doesn't threaten lives, and causes zero wear on our roads. Yet the cargo bike has to beg for every single scrap of safe infrastructure, while the massive SUV is just handed the entire city by default.

This iconic Fabian Todorovic cartoon is still one of the best I’ve seen at illustrating the remarkable amount of space we surrender to cars, leaving little space left for everyone and everything else. The text added later makes the bonus point that many drivers still manage to complain about it.
Cartoon image of a street with much of the space taken up by a car with a single driver, while the rest of the street has people tightly packed in a bus, a bus shelter and riding bikes in a bike lane. Adding insult to injury, the driver says “damn those bike paths and bike lanes taking all the space.”

Urbanist Philomena Cunk. To keep cyclists safe, the council will sometimes paint a thin stripe of green paint on the edge of the road. This is very thoughtful, because it gives delivery drivers a brightly colored VIP parking space to wait in while they drop off a parcel.
