Hobbs et al's main conclusion is that Yellowstone shows hysteresis, multiple stable states. Removal of predators led from beaver-willow to elk-grassland. Also b/c of bison, this can't change back to beaver-willow, even with wolves. Wolf removal forced even more change than previously understood.

Passive rewilding refers to *actively unmanaged* environments that are allowed to regain natural dominance, typically after their abandonment. 🧵 Sometimes referred to as "natural regeneration", it differs from other forms of rewilding in that direct human management or intervention is absent.

Another nasty feedback enhancing climate change. Arctic glaciers hold bakc a bunch of ancient methane stored in the rocks beneath the ice. The more glaciers melt, the more methane they are likely to release. 🧪 Link: www.nature.com/articles/s41467-026-…
Conceptual model of subglacial methane mobilization.
Methane can be introduced to the subglacial drainage system by thermogenic and microbial sources, especially beneath temperate ice zones where the ice-bed interface is thawed and hydraulically conductive. Permafrost beneath cold ice zones, where the ice-bed interface is frozen, substantially reduces hydraulic permeability, and therefore methane sources are limited. Once the glacial river is exposed to the atmosphere, methane begins to outgas, although some methane may be consumed in the river by in-stream methanotrophy. Potential additional sources of methane to the proglacial river include in-stream methanogenesis and inflows of methane-rich groundwater.

Taxpayers' money? 🧵 • State and local governments rely on income & borrowed funds. When you pay taxes to a state or to a eurozone country, they use them. • Sovereign countries issue their own currency at will. When you pay taxes to a monetary-sovereign country, the Treasury destroys them on arrival.

"Against The Pathologization Of Scientific Understanding" Preprint of a forthcoming commentary from Erkan & me. Pathologization of many scientific processes and practices has become increasingly popular w the replication crisis. Such pathologies do not accurately represent the scientific process.
Abstract

Illusions of Understanding in the Sciences raises a concern: Scientists frequently overestimate what they understand about the systems they study. This overestimation is said to potentially distort inference, encourage premature theoretical closure, and undermine public trust in science. We argue that the article fails to distinguish between remediable problems, structural challenges, and genuine cognitive limitations; mistakes individual limitations for system-wide epistemic failures; and treats idealization and pluralism as epistemic concessions rather than constitutive features of scientific endeavor. We believe that the unified ‘illusion’ pathology does not successfully accommodate the organized, socially distributed nature of scientific endeavor
