This morning was gloriously damp and gloomy, and this slug was on a trek across the greenbelt and somehow miraculously dodged bicycles, walkers, and doggos. I made it a little leaf carriage, and did a quick little transport to the grass for which it was headed.

Limax maximus, or a leopard slug, is a large brownish slug with dark spots (thus its common name). It has very gamely crawled from the concrete onto two golden poplar leaves that I laid out for it so that I could transport it to the grass without touching it (for both our benefit).

This made me quite emotional. As a kid who grew up without means, the fact that there were programs to get me into the opera (and the philharmonic, Shakespeare festival, and ballet) were hugely impactful for me. Everyone deserves to experience this, even if it ultimately isn't for you! 🥹

At the beginning of the month Drexel University made public that they want to close the Academy of Natural Sciences at the end of the month. The academy is the oldest natural history museum in the Americas and this would end more than 200 years of research and outreach.
