There probably was someone called Emily Wilson who wrote a critical review of Nolan’s Odyssey, but most of what we now think of as “Wilson’s review’ is probably the result of codifying a long tradition of anonymous Bluesky posting.

Right. Okay. This requires some backstory. In 1984, a small, low budget film studio in North Carolina produced a parody of Star Wars, called Hyperspace. It was released in the U.K. as ‘Gremloids’. The main character, shown here, was Lord Buckethead.
A somewhat grainy, sorry, theatrical release poster.

It's 20 December and here in London we have 17 hours of darkness. so, as I do, I commend to you Sing For The Coming of the Longest Night, co-written by me & my bff @krfabian.bsky.social: a solstice poly romance, complete with jolly vicars, haunted theremins, & deep, sweet, weird-ancient magic. ❄️🎄🏳️‍🌈
Book cover: Sing for the Coming of the Longest Night, by Katherine Fabian and Iona Datt Sharma (a deep blue background, silver text and a sprig of holly)text: The world you know is underneath the substance of another, with cracks in the firmament that let the light of its magic in…

Layla and Nat have nothing in common but their boyfriend – enigmatic, brilliant Meraud – and their deep mutual dislike. But when Meraud disappears after an ambitious magical experiment goes wrong, they may be the only ones who can follow the trail of cryptic clues that will bring him safely home.

To return Meraud to this world, the two of them will confront every obstacle: the magic of the wild unknowable, a friendly vicar who’s only concerned for their spiritual wellbeing, and even the Thames Water helpline. All of which would be doable, if only they didn’t have to do it together.

But the winter solstice is fast approaching – and once the year turns, Meraud will be lost forever. As buried secrets lead to unexpected revelations, Nat and Layla must find a way to overcome their differences before it’s too late.

This is beautiful. Art saving lives.
A newspaper clipping titled “Saved by Stoppard”. It contains a letter from Michael Baum describing how watching the 1993 first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard gave him an insight into chaos theory that transformed his understanding of breast cancer progression. He recounts Thomasina’s line about equations for a bell, bluebell, and rose, and explains that this helped him realise cancer spreads non-linearly, leading to the concept of adjuvant systemic chemotherapy and improvements in patient survival. The letter ends by noting that Stoppard never knew how many lives he saved by writing the play. The author is identified as Michael Baum, Professor emeritus of surgery and visiting professor of medical humanities at UCL.

Next time an institution tells you how seriously it takes research misconduct, ask them if it's *this* seriously. www.bmj.com/content/297/...
In 1916 the BMJ published an article about the work done by James Shearer, an American physician working in the British Army as a sergeant (because he had no British qualification). He had described a
"delineator" which was better than x rays for portraying gunshot wounds. This caused a sensation and a lot of interest — but on investigation the work was found to have been invented. The BMJ published a retraction, but Shearer was tried by court martial and sentenced to death by firing squad.
