Book 35 of 2026 The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah Started: 26/09/26 Finished: 05/10/26 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - 5/5 This was an epic tale in every sense of the word. Very intense in places but I absolutely loved it. It was so interesting to get a glimpse of what life is like in that part of Alaska too. 💙📚

I've just heard someone on a podcast use the phrase "they made a complete Horlicks of it" (to mean they completely f'ked it up) and a) I have never heard that phrase before and b) I am absolutely adopting it and going to try to get it into at least one Teams meeting a week 😂

Had a bit of a breakdown this afternoon about how many barriers there are to us going out (wheelchair access, needing to mask, autism/anxiety, how disgustingly expensive 3M aura masks are and that some unscrupulous people sell expired PPE on eBay and generally WHY AM I SO WEIRD)

Decided to Go Out and do a Thing this morning which was already stressful and then my mask broke and I very nearly ditched the idea and had a panic attack in the car instead. I had a spare mask but it wasn't as good so I did the Thing but it was a lot. I'm not sure being part of society is for me 😂

Yesterday was our 15th wedding anniversary; a reminder that marriage is a lot of love and wonderful times but also involves doing very hard things together too. We switched our anniversary to today and have had a lovely trip to Calke Abbey to engage in a spot of geocaching 🤓 and of course a scone 😍

We had to say goodbye to Simeon this morning 😥 It all happened really fast but the vet thinks he had cancer and we couldn't keep him comfortable so it was time. We're absolutely devastated 💔

Kicked off our annual leave with an evening at the vet. Simeon has an infection, v.arthritic back legs and we're not sure if he's had a wee today. Pumped full of meds and now we see if he'll eat and wee, otherwise we're back to the vet tomorrow. But at least the builders have gone!

Last day of the building work and the floors are being laid. Luckily the builder warned me before they started how strong smelling the adhesive is so I had time to put a mask on and get the air purifier going. Hopefully it'll clear by tonight otherwise I guess this is just how I look now 😂

Surprise visit today from my best friend who lives on Anglesey (so we don't get to see her often). I gave Simeon a Lick-e-Lix with Prednisolone in it. He's eaten half the Lick-e-Lix but I have no way of knowing whether he's consumed any Pred or whether he has somehow managed to eat his way around it - I thought I'd mixed it in really well but who knows! Hoping this stimulates his appetite a bit.

I had a very strange experience today when I was leaving the library. I'd just got to my car - which was parked in a disabled bay - and somebody pulled up and asked if I was leaving. I said I was but that it would take me a long time to get my wheelchair into the car. She said no problem, I'll wait.

Simeon isn't eating properly and generally looks very fed up. It could be because of the noise of the builders & the fact his litter tray and food are in a different place but it's very hard to tell with him. Taking him to the vet stresses him out too so I don't want to rush into doing that.

10+ years ago when we were foster carers, we had a very bad Christmas because our foster daughter was Going Through Stuff and this equalled no sleep, or indeed downtime, for about a month. In the January she went into respite & we went to stay at a Christian retreat house nearby.

Do any union friends know if there's an exemption with care work that means they don't have to give you an uninterrupted 20 min break if you're working 6+ hours? Several care providers I've worked with haven't done this - you work a shorter shift (7.5hrs) but are expected to eat with clients.
