The AI backlash is completely the fault of the dishonest hype merchants whose only talent is innovating new ways of lying. You pissed people off, now everyone hates you (justified) and your tech (less justified, but again, your fault)

I think it's closer to the truth that LLMs *can* save time on *some tasks* which can be valuable *if* you monitor them and check their output. But that doesn't get you a trillion dollars so they have to squint into the middle distance and say stupid sci fi bullshit instead

Fascism in the '20s and '30s arose from military defeat, national trauma and extreme economic instability. Present-day fascism seems to arise from boredom, impatience and chronic public amnesia.

I think it is crucial for the health of the Democratic party that the entire consultant class from previous administrations, including and especially Clinton, be told to go home and stop bothering people. They are wrong about everything and have been holding the party back for decades.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

The scene most emblematic of this issue to me is the bus parking lot atop the mountain at Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto. WHY are tourist buses allowed up there? They’re a climate menace, ruin the atmosphere of the pilgrimage road, and flood the zone with people who should have to WALK like everyone else.

The manifesto I could write about this and its intersections with anti-immigrant (???) and generally xenophobic sentiment. Large swaths of the Japanese tourism industry (and particularly tourist hotspots and sites of national heritage) are just not being responsible.

The problem with education is that it's a solved problem. Students need small classes, individual attention, lots of writing, lots of feedback, access to a well-stocked library, time to think, and time to talk with their peers. We just don't like the answer, so we keep trying to do other stuff.

We've got a Muslim man running the most multicultural city in the world and making space for all the people in it. That's what cultural victory over fundamentalism looks like, it's a shame that there's a part of the population that couldn't identify a cultural victory if it slapped them in the face.

If you want to hedge with the term "democratic socialist-aligned," then you should note that he does not self-identify as a socialist, but as a capitalist. Would you refer to Trump as a "white supremacist-aligned" candidate because of endorsements from figures like David Duke or Richard Spencer?

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see it, but FYI—Abdul El-Sayed is NOT a member of DSA. He is just Muslim. These are in fact different things. cc: @tanglenews.bsky.social
readtangle.com answer to reader question on DSA support for abolishing the police

Text: "As for individual DSA or democratic socialist-aligned candidates, it’s a mixed bag. Politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) were vocal supporters of defunding the police in 2020 but have stopped centering the issue in their platforms (though they haven’t explicitly renounced the slogan, either). Some, like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) and Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed (D), have sought to distance themselves from past support. And others, like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), have opposed the idea from the beginning."

Since I can’t respond to all comments here, I’ll mention as others have that Piker’s response to an anti-Zionist Jewish caller’s ? is essentially what Arendt sd in 1944: Israel’s war on Palestine & its neighbors risks turning the country into a pariah state & the diaspora into unwilling accomplices
If a Jewish commonwealth is obtained in the near future-with or without partition-it will be due to the political influence of American Jews.... But if the Jewish commonwealth is proclaimed against the will of the Arabs and without the support of the Mediterranean peoples, not only financial help but political support will be necessary for a long time to come. And that may turn out to be very troublesome indeed for Jews in this country [the U.S.], who after all have no power to direct the political destinies of the Near East. It may eventually be far more of a responsibility than today they imagine or tomorrow can make good.[Tlhe Zionists, if they continue to ignore the Mediterranean people and watch out only for the big faraway powers, will appear only as their tools, the agents of foreign and hostile interests. Jews who know their own history should be aware that such a state of affairs will inevitably lead to a new wave of Jew-hatred; the antisemitism of tomorrow will assert that Jews not only profiteered from the presence of foreign big powers in that region
but had actually plotted it and hence are guilty of the
consequences...
