This is how the whole thing is stacked — people in their 60s and 70s with houses paid off, money in the bank and EVs in the drive saving ever more money on solar and energy efficiency grants while renters in their 30s pay €1.80 a litre to heat 40 year old moldy uninsulated garrets.

Same. It's so out of reach, and as you rightly say, this assistance is only set up for and accessible to A Certain Type of Person. Definitely not the type of person that needs it the most.

disabled people put considerable time, effort and resources into participating in this consultation. I would say the two most consistent themes I heard were (1) don't do a once-off lump sum and (2) don't limit it to people on DA. it doesn't inspire confidence that this is the govt's opening bid

he's saying the right words about co-design, but it is difficult to have much confidence when the starting point – a one-off lump sum only for people on disability allowance – is a fundamental misunderstanding of what a cost of disability payment is and not what DPOs advocated in our submissions

I don't want tax cuts. I want services that work for all of us. What good is extra money in my pocket if I'm terrified to go out to my local hospital in an emegency. Or if a large proportion of people in my city are living in poverty or homelessness or with addiction.

I've said it before. A Government party isn't your team to root for, it's a utility provider. You don't have to like them, you just pick the one that works best. The utilities that keep giving you some of your own money back are the ones acknowledging a failure to provide the service you requested

This is written to fly under the radar, from today’s Sunday Independent (Ireland). The press council upheld a complaint about an offensive and transphobic opinion column by Brenda Power. Sindo was required to publish the decision. @mams4transrights.bsky.social @jesalady.bsky.social
A half page article from the Sunday independent with the headline OMB2590 A woman and the Sunday independent.
The article outlines the complaint, the appeal and the decision.
The complaint relates to an opinion column deploring the fact that an unnamed td provided a character reference for a man convicted of sexual violence against children. A sentence in the column argued that this case threw light on the possibility that a man would “identify as a woman” in order to commit sexual violence.
The press council concluded that “a reference to a protected group [trans people] in this context should have been extremely carefully scrutinised”. It found that the Sunday independent was in violation of principle 8 of the press council code of practice.
