1) i cannot fathom how cool it would be if Angie Nixon somehow pulled it off in November, rooting for her completely 2) fascinating to see her campaign attempt to merge an unabashedly populist rhetoric with two points for “homeowners rights” against insurance companies and “big corporations”

for all the handwringing about city council drama i don’t think this gets emphasized nearly enough
“Our City Council now, for better or worse, is more representative of Portland,” Valdini said. “It doesn’t always make things easier when a lot of different voices are heard in government.”

“But now you have a City Council that is divided and represents the divisions in Portland. I see this as a success story.”

Councilor Eric Zimmerman ( District 4 candidate) has a proven record of clearing barriers to housing production, including cosponsoring a package of reforms to the City’s design review process with Councilor Angelita Morillo. We appreciate his vision for mixed-income communities and housing abundance, and we look forward to future collaboration to advance it together. However, our endorsement committee found his responses and record on policy approaches to homelessness were not well aligned with our values around housing justice.

Labbe said much of the criticism was “fear mongering” and described the $16 million set-aside as a tiny share of the city’s overall budget.

“We had $100 million last year of housing money that we realized wasn’t being spent, we had another $10 million in arts tax money that wasn’t used,” Labbe added. “At a time when the mayor is proposing to spend millions to do luxury improvements on the Moda Center, to say that we can’t afford to give people more voice over our existing funds just makes no sense.”

anyway, all of this is required reading, especially as PPS gears up for a redistricting conversation that is going to involve some very difficult and thorny decisions about closing schools. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/20/m...
Most New York City public elementary students attend a school zoned to their neighborhood — children in wealthy white neighborhoods attend wealthy white schools, and poor Black children attend poor Black schools. But if affluent parents move to a gentrifying neighborhood, they can exercise “school choice” and send their children elsewhere. There are schools in neighborhoods like Harlem, Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant, where I live, where about a quarter of the kindergarten students zoned for those attend them, according to a 2018 report by the Center for New York City Affairs. By middle school and high school, a majority of students take part in the school-choice attendance system, but most kids cannot get into selective schools and instead find themselves in schools that have no enrollment criteria.

hard to blame Americans for adopting less trust in society when we live in a hideously predatory, scam-based economy
Several gamblers told The Times that promotions fueled their addictions. Bryan Biehl lost nearly $70,000 gambling online, more than half of it at DraftKings. Mr. Biehl recalled how in late 2024, when he started therapy for his addiction, his email inbox began to feel like a relapse risk.

“I would get flooded with bonuses and deposits,” Mr. Biehl said. “If you are in addiction, you are not going to say no.”

In the first two weeks of December 2024, Mr. Biehl received 40 promotions from DraftKings, emails show. He succumbed to temptation one last time on Christmas Day before putting himself on self-exclusion lists, which blocked him from gambling apps.

in round 26 of the RCV in D4 in 2024: 25% for Clark ~41% combined for a slew of progressives (Green, Lykins, Silkie, Freeman) ~29% for Zimmerman + Arnold Mitch isn't going anywhere, and it'd ultimately only take a couple hundred votes shifting for Green/Evanstar to get 50% and win two seats

be alive today is to keep the constant company of this trembling image-self. Alone in your bed, scrolling on your phone, the screen goes black between distractions and briefly reveals a ghastly face in the murky depths; your face, seen from an angle once reserved for long-suffering spouses. We see more of ourselves than any people before us. This ubiquity hasn’t brought us into a deeper understanding of ourselves. The opposite is true. It has alienated us from ourselves. It’s making us miserable.

seems the biggest takeaway is “be wary of internal polls”
I also want to note the El-Sayed campaign and their allies have deployed a tactic in this race that’s been used by Republicans in recent years, and not by us - flooding the zone with favorable polls to shape the narrative of the race. In the past month 5 of the 12 primary polls released in Michigan have come from the El-Sayed campaign or their ideological allies - almost half. In those polls he leads by an average of 15 points. In June they released three additional general election polls. So if I counted correctly El-Sayed’s world released 8 of the 18 polls we’ve seen in Michigan these past two months - 44%, again almost half. This was a major effort to shape the understanding of the race. I'm not sure there has been anything like this on our side of the game in recent years.

As we’ve discussed here the decline of legacy media means that our understanding of elections will be, unfortunately, increasingly shaped by partisan or ideological actors using polls, prediction markets, and on-line manipulation to ferociously manufacture “consent” or as Renee DiResta called it recently a “majority illusion

"VAR is, there is little doubt, the generative AI of the football world."
In a poll of 7,000 football fans published just a few months ago, in March 2026, 91% of respondents said the sport is better off without VAR and 81% said they preferred watching matches without the technology. 92% said VAR killed the “spontaneous joy” of celebrating a goal. Just 2% agreed with the statement that “VAR makes football more enjoyable.” Since its implementation in the UK’s Premier League, YouGov polls have consistently found that large majorities of viewers believe VAR “works poorly.”

In other words: It’s a ubiquitous automation and surveillance system, adopted and maintained by those in positions of power with promises of progress and improvement, despite inspiring widespread disdain among those it is promoted it as serving (football players and fans). Its public poll numbers are in the gutter. It even has its own instantly identifiable acronym. VAR is, there is little doubt, the generative AI of the football world.

guns vs butter, highway boondoggle edition
That tension was most clearly articulated by Senator Khan Pham, who has been one of the primary negotiators tasked with trying to get a transportation package across the finish line in Oregon, with the most recent proposal to shore up transportation revenue statewide recently repealed by Oregon voters.

"Having been in the trenches of the transportation package struggle in Salem last year, I am here this morning to say that it will be challenging to pass a package that meets our state's basic needs if I am also expected to raise additional billions of dollars for current and future cost overruns of an oversized highway bridge project," Senator Khan Pham told the Oregon Transportation Commission in May. "Every additional billion committed to this project is funding unavailable for preservation, maintenance, safety, and transit needs across Oregon."

Years ago Oregon Walks led a “#workzonewtf” campaign that got the city to pass regulations that developers would be forced to make a temporary protected sidewalk during construction. Does that law still exist? Is it just not enforced anymore? Stumbled onto this on Alberta today
