I’m constitutionally incapable of doing math, actually, but I know that we aren’t getting anywhere without building Big Number of homes, and I asked Nick and Payton to figure it out, which they did.

I refuse to do the “haha nerrrrrrds” thing about zoning or trains or w/e (and I am *really* not a train person). The bizarre kneejerk reaction of people who are Into Built Environment Shit to marginalize it and make fun of themselves is ?????? Use the jargon. Be hype about literally creating it.

I’ve been reading Gans’ The Urban Villagers on and off since May, when I was in Boston (and went to the West End Museum), and there are consistently nuggets.

It was a revenue-neutral redesign!! Riders' experience was: Their route probably physically changed, and the route names *definitely* changed. Also, people be driving, and people need 2 b driving less: 51st.news/metro-tried-...

Metro tried to make bus service better. Somehow, ridership and speeds are both down

Me + @westnorth.com on why transit-oriented development is an outdated framework for building more housing in D.C. (The answer is, yes, sixplexes.): ggwash.org/view/104207/...

Think outside the circle, DC OP
If it were the 1970s, this proposal from the DC Office of Planning would be cutting edge. Instead, it stands to seriously hold back housing in the District.

I was considering livetweeting the AV hearing, which I came on down to da Wilson building for, but it’s all quite boring, actually. Season 1 of this show, Mr. Uber Goes to Washington, was goofier and more dramatic, and in the intervening 12 years we have not made people drive less here.

Yes, there are about 250 million cars and SUVs in the U.S. that nearly all run on gasoline and they make about 1,000 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year and they stay on the road for 12-20+ years.

but an infill station will cost a billion with a b (no you can't see the analysis) and it won't do anything to move anybody faster on a game day, so we can't have it. nvm that the only barely remediating factor of this whole thing, the residential dev, will not be anywhere near a metro station.

I have retired from the gentrification-discourse posting wars to get candidates who want to legalize sixplexes and build big buildings on public land, with very little public input, elected to office.

An arrow pointing right. No, wait, that’s not accurate. A rounded white rectangle with a cutout in the shape of an arrow pointing right. It’s all about negative space, see? There’s no arrow there. Only the absence of an arrow. Think about the implications. What if Zeno’s Arrow was only the absence of an arrow, stretching forever into infinite space. But if the arrow is actually the lack of an arrow, then infinite space is the lack of infinite space. All of reality condensed into a single point, a dense gravitational mass, the smallest of black holes. Smaller than the period at the end of this sentence, and more meaningful too.

I wish Schwalb had answered the GGWash candidate questionnaire because I like what he’s up to and would like to be able to champion him more. If the council’s fair housing bill passes, his equitable land use division could be doing much more dope stuff like this, faster.

OK, trying for a more coherent thread now that I’m not about to fall asleep. First thing is that I am simply not as pressed about the Chevy Chase civic core as others. I believe that, in a vacuum, dev there should be: publicly owned, majority income-restricted/subsidized (probably 40-60%—*not* ELI),

Really hate having to exist around the National Guard as a general matter. There was also a pretty sharp dropoff in activity, spending, etc., in our ~already fragile~ downtown associated with their initial deployment, but not even capitalism can end this shit lol.

this is the only valid theory of NIMBYism. it is also why we must not be the equal/opposite in supporting development. no one thing should be your whole world. unhealthy.

OK look bike ppl *are* annoying about being bike ppl! I worked for a bike advocacy org and ran a bikeshare system—I MYSELF AM LIKE THIS. But one’s stance on bike lanes tends to be a decent proxy for whether they can handle more city or not.
