Good end-of-FY coverage by the Times. The amount of unspent funds has wiggled but it was pretty clear for some time now that NSF was simply not going to spend a substantial portion of its congressional appropriation this year.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

The Dallas Zoo & Fort Worth Zoo, both wonderful programs, are working with Texas Parks & Wildlife to restore wild populations of Texas horned lizards (Phrynosoma cornutum) via zoo breed & release programs. 2026 is already a RECORD year: > 1000 lizards released, with documented wild-born babies.
A gloved human hand holds a round plastic container like you might put a salad in, but there are teeny-tiny horned lizards all alert looking and fierce inside.

"Aaand off they go!
Yesterday, 116 Texas horned lizards started their exciting journey to be released into the wild. Our team has worked tirelessly since their hatching to ensure these little ones are fully prepped and ready for this big moment. Stay tuned for more details on their release!
Our Texas horned lizard conservation program is a collaborative effort with Texas Parks and Wildlife, Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation, and several of our dedicated zoo partners."An adult horned toad sitting in sandy dirt in West Texas, with a mix of native shrubs and non-native grasses in the background. They're well camouflaged against the red-brown dirt, covered in spikes and watch the camera warily.

Member action is needed. Please read the email, review the proposed SSE response, and consider signing on before the June 15 deadline. **Importantly, submit your individualized comment to OMB by July 13!** Screenshots of the full message below. ⬇️
Dear SSE Community,

I hope this message finds you well, wherever the new season has taken you. I'm writing with news that requires our community's immediate attention and action.

On May 29, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) published a proposed rule — the largest overhaul of federal grant regulations since 2013 — that would fundamentally restructure how scientific research is funded in the United States. The comment deadline is July 13, 2026. That gives us six weeks, and we need every one of them.

Read the proposed rule.

Scientists have worked with local villages to protect the commercially valuable fish from poachers while allowing villagers to profit from a sustainable arapaima harvest.
