With the closure of the Itshmus of Panama & acceleration of Andean uplift, many American lineages diversified. The leaf-toed gecko is one example, where a time calibrated phylogeny revealed North & Central American lineages to be older, suggesting dispersal across land & sea! 🌍🧪👇 buff.ly/3bybFuD
A little leaf toed gecko sits atop a wooden log, his eyes blending into his skin as perfect camouflage. A small box surrounded by a yellow border shows a close up of its famous feet, with each toe kind of resembling a fern leaf (though in my personal opinion, the name is misleading, as it does not, infact, have leaves for toes).

Happy to announce two-fold news! 1) The SCINKD paper is now published in @molbioevol.bsky.social - doi.org/10.1093/molb... 2) SCINKD [v2.2.4] release has reduced runtimes (about 2x) and the revitalized mode for genomes >5Gb is now live and tested on genomes up to 21Gb! 🐸 github.com/DrPintoThe2n...

Behrens et al. investigate the evolution of sex chromosomes in the ancestors of the lacustrine radiations of East African cichlids, showing slower sex chromosome turnover than in the rapidly diversifying haplochromines. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evaf191 #genome #evolution #cichlids

Though iconic, the species diversity of rock monitor lizards remains incomplete. Here, 3 new species of Varanus in NE Australia are described, adding to a growing list of endemic reptile from the Eastern Savannas & underscoring the importance of rocky habitats! 🌍🧪 doi.org/10.1093/zool...

Distant lizard relatives Liolaemus cuyanus & L. rojanus live side by side in Argentina's Monte Desert but use different physiological strategies to remain hydrated. Surprisingly smaller L. rojanus are at less risk of dehydration than larger L. cuyanus journals.biologists.com/jeb/article/...

Ho et al. present genome assemblies for the parental species of the unisexual hybrid New Mexico Whiptail Lizard, using it to analyze WGS data from the hybrids, suggesting that genomes of unisexual lineages diverge more quickly than anticipated. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evaf228 #genome #evolution
