I am off to Brittany on Tuesday, and I hope to visit one of my favourite ancient (or probably ancient) monuments. Known as 'Babouin' (the Baboon), this enigmatic carved stone of indeterminate age can be found in the woods near Trédion. #StandingStoneSunday
A standing stone carved with a stylised face. The ground around it is covered in fallen leaves and there are trees behind.

Adorable wooden horses on wheels were pulled around by little ones in the past, too. A timeless reminder that play has been part of the human experience for millennia. From Egypt, Roman period, 30 BC-150 AD. 📷 Julia Thorne/Manchester Museum 🏺
A wooden toy horse on for wheels. Its surface bears incised vertical lines, chips, cracks from age. There is hole in the head, likely for attaching a string to pull it along.

People from all walks of life — including many British Jews — are protesting against your government’s complicity in genocide and standing in solidarity with Palestine. Conflating Israel’s genocide in Gaza with British Jews is deeply inappropriate and dangerous. Shame on you.

The other day I drew a subway-style map for The Hobbit, and it was very well received. Some of you asked if I could do one for LoTR, so I have! Forgive the eel watermark; I'm working on making these something you can buy, if you like.
Subway style map to go with The Lord of the Rings, showing the different pathways of various parties throughout the book. The title reads: "Lord of the Rings Transit Map: One Does Not Simply Walk Ino Mordor When One Can Ride." The map takes up the middle part of the page, and there are two keys. The one on the left is titles "Standard Service Lines, and has color keys matched to the subway lines on the map. Lines are named:
"Shire-Bree Commuter Line
Old Forrest Crescent
Wildland Scenic Line
Fellowship Line
Gollum / Sméagol Line
Uruk Hai Express
Three Hunters Line
Fangorn Slow Service
Rohan to Gondor Business Line
Black Ships Ferry Service
Oliphant Direct Line
Army of the West Line
Gandalf Express

A smaller key on the right side of the map is labeled: "Limited Service Lines" and has color keys matched to the following names lines:
"Eagle Express
Paths of the Dead Line
Nazgûl Search & Resuce
Valinor Ltd."

A note at the bottom reads:
"* Mount Doom station only accepts Rings of Power in payment. Plan accordingly."

Most people in France, Germany, Italy and Spain would support UK rejoining EU, poll finds
YouGov survey suggests majority support idea of Britain returning to bloc – but not on same terms it once enjoyed A decade after MPs voted to hold the referendum that led to Britain leaving the European Union, a poll has found majorities in the bloc’s four largest member states would support the UK rejoining – but not on the same terms it had before. The YouGov survey of six western European countries, including the UK, also confirms that a clear majority of British voters now back the country rejoining the bloc – but only if it can keep the opt-outs it previously enjoyed. The BBC is destroying itself over this issue. Today it was censoring Glastonbury shows; earlier this week it refused to screen a doco it commissioned, because the film showed … doctors talking about what they experienced in Gaza. Obviously BBC mgrs haven’t heard of the Streisand effect either.

Anything and everything Trump does is to benefit one person, Trump. America needs to wake up. Democracy or its form of it (that’s a conversation for another day) is being systematically dismantled as we speak, breaking the constitution, which the republicans are supposedly all about.

TIL that Diego Luna was a Zapatista??? BRO
Luna is reluctant to identify specific contributions he made to Andor, insisting instead that "everyone is indispensable." That mentality feels shaped by his father's tutelage, and perhaps by his time as a teenager volunteering with an Indigenous-rights movement organized by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation in 1994.
