Is this real? If so, Trump has struck a deal for Russian oil. If this goes ahead, the US will be funding Russia’s war machine as it murders children, tortures, rapes and murders Ukrainian people as part of its genocidal war

I'm sorry if this is obvious but the Tory proposal to exempt family homes completely from IHT will lead to 1] pensioners buying the biggest houses they possibly can 2] pensioners refusing to downsize which can only be bad news for younger families trying to buy family homes

A large group of co-ordinated, masked men blockading a piece of significant infrastructure is a security threat and should be dealt with as one. There should also be serious questions about why police/intelligence services didn't pick up on it in advance.

I'm pretty sure that in recent memory Zia Yusuf's racism would have been high up the bbc news agenda - reported as racism- that the Conservative party would have attacked him for it and a Labour PM would go for him big time. Now it's all a bit 'well everyone's a bit racist now what can you do' 🤷‍♂️

Missed Stock saying autism, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia are ‘intellectual disabilities’ (???) making people ‘unsuited’ for academia. Okay, what. But did she ever talk to any of her colleagues, or did she sprint to her car after her lectures on how we know what a text means by asking the author?

I mean, I'd be very unhappy if such extreme temperatures became the norm because it's really uncomfortable, but I'd also be absolutely delighted as it'd mean we'd reached net zero emissions and brought the climate crisis under some sort of control. Sadly, that's not going to happen any time soon.

This. Flying the flag is all about context. Royal wedding, fine; BNP rally, no. This really isn't hard. And yet councils seem reluctant to remove the flags as they may upset people 'simply expressing their patriotism'. It is flatly not that; it is marking out territory. (Starmer useless here.)

I see Simon Heffer, in Michael Gove's Spectator, is once again repeating his lie that Enoch Powell's Rivers of Blood speech wasn't about race.. I debated Heffer recently (at the Oxford Litfest) - here's what I said. archive.ph/bqKZF
So, that’s the economics. But let me address the topic directly. No doubt Simon Heffer will argue that, like his hero Enoch Powell, he is raising “legitimate concerns”. Simon has written that Powell’s predictions were remarkably accurate, and that those who, like me, describe him and his acolytes as racist are deliberately lying. He has also said that Powell’s famous Rivers of Blood speech should be taught in schools, since it is so rarely quoted accurately. So I will quote it accurately

“Eight years ago in a respectable street in Wolverhampton a house was sold to a Negro. Now only one white (a woman old-age pensioner) lives there. This is her story. When she goes to the shops, she is followed by children, charming, wide-grinning piccaninnies. They cannot speak English, but one word they know. “Racialist,” they chant. When the new Race Relations Bill is passed, this woman is convinced she will go to prison. And is she so wrong?”
So 3 points here.
First, none of Powell’s classical allusions later in the speech can conceal the gutter-level racism here. And let’s not hear any crap about “everyone spoke like that then”. No they didn’t which is why mainstream politicians of both parties instantly recognised the speech as unacceptable racism
Second, Powell is obviously lying. “They cannot speak English”? Seriously? Black kids whose parents were from the Carribbean?
Third, and most important, this gives the lie to Simon’s repeated claims the speech isn’t about race or racist. The direct target of the speech is the Race Relations Bill. This was not about immigration, obviously; it made it illegal to discriminate on grounds of race in employment or housing.

The “Blue Labour” strategy still being promoted by some on Labour right is premised on being able to win social conservatives while holding on to social liberals. Failure state for this strategy is failing to win social cons while alienating social liberals. Here is a map of that failure state:

This is a key point in a good article by Sadiq Khan. It's possible to come up with long, involved explanations of why people should not feel threatened by particular chants, but the reality is that many do. So the humane response is to stop using those chants. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
I also appeal again to the common decency of Londoners. Even if there is uncertainty about which chants cross legal thresholds, if it causes distress and is offensive to Jewish people – if it makes our fellow Jewish citizens scared – it should not be used. Respect for one another must remain the foundation of London life. It is not hard to express criticism of Israel without using language that incites violence.

So what this describes is ethnic cleansing www.nytimes.com/2026/04/01/w...

But behind the scenes, Israeli officials have conveyed a more targeted message.

In private calls to local leaders across southern Lebanon, Israeli military officials have assured several Christian and Druse communities that they could remain in the evacuation zone. They have pressed them, however, to force out any Lebanese from neighboring Shiite Muslim communities who have sought refuge among them as Israeli bombardment flatten Shiite towns, according to local Christian, Druse and Shiite leaders who spoke to The New York Times. The Shiites make up the majority of southern Lebanon.
