Deeply ironic that Adelaide's bid for COP31 has a good chance of exclusion-zoning a heap of their rail public transport. This is hot on the heels of SA Labor locking in parking minimums! There's gotta be something in the water...

Going to be rather enjoyable seeing the reactions of those parents supporting the ban of social media for under 16s, discovering that means they now have to prove to YouTube, FB, etc that they are over 16. "I thought this was just about the kids, I'm over 16, why do I need to provide ID???!!!!!"

The Portland area transit service expansion plan that we worked on had just two goals: ridership and equity. Here are some of the payoffs: New service in lower-income inner-ring suburbs, including a new Frequent line and a new line that has a chance to be Frequent someday. But there's more 🧵 1/

Because by occupying one of the 6 traffic lanes for a period of about half an hour, "people's right to freedom of movement would be excessively interfered with". So people's right to freedom of movement being completely denied for months without end is fine, but impeding a few cars is a problem.

2/3 of real estate agents aren’t subject to the Privacy Act. REA reps love to say that including them would be “overreach” while at the same time insisting they *already* focus on data protection. Well, if you’re already doing the right thing then being covered wouldn’t make a difference, would it?

We actually *don’t* have to trust real estate agencies to do the right thing with our data. Renters have no choice but to give it to you, but we don’t have to trust you with it. Relying on the goodwill of REAs ain’t it. Strong and enforced law forcing them to act fairly and responsibly is though.
A screenshot of an ABC article that reads:

They argued that the changes would be a "regulatory overreach", saying the red tape could have major implications for smaller agencies.

Institute president Leanne Pilkington said real estate agents were focused on the importance of data protection.

"The business owners don't want a breach. We've all seen what can happen with some of the big businesses with breaches," she said.

"We have to trust that the business owners are focused on those things."

I’m genuinely confused by this line of argument. As we show in the paper, the evidence is that rent assistance has minimal impact on rents. But even aside from that, it’s really just a welfare payment. Should we be concerned that the JobSeeker payment ‘guarantees’ the profits of Coles and Woolies?

Introduction to Transit Service Policy
This course explores the geometric facts underlying how transit networks work and how these networks interact with the built environment to create ridership potential. This discussion includes a review of key principles and examples from various recent network designs. We review the multiple and competing goals for transit, and what difficult tradeoffs still need to be made in making transit policy. We will also explore the relatively new concept of access to opportunity as a possibly unifying measure of a transit network’s success.

It’s a little unfair that we are asking transit buses, of all vehicles, to carry the water for decarbonizing transportation. The technology is there for private autos which are a much bigger source of pollution but it is not nearly as good for buses which have a much more demanding service pattern.
