My (low-confidence) impression, as a non-American, is that it's the other way around: when you can't win the political battles required to abolish the death penalty, energy is concentrated on the subsidiary issues which can be fought out in courts rather than legislatures

University police departments are a fascinating Americanism. How can each university (and I suppose every tiny city and town and village) have such a tiny force of its own and manage them to anywhere near the standards of modern policing?

Gamer friend messages me asking "should I get a 5600X or a 5700X for my media PC" and I'm like "well my main desktop is a... 3600X maybe [all I know for sure is it starts with a 3] so I think the 5600X will probably be fine"

I resigned from Google today. I enjoyed my work and loved the people, but my GDM team was working on a new generation of chips to make AI much faster and cheaper, and I think AI is already progressing too fast, so I had to quit.

My entirely irrelevant Medicare hack hot take: while the feds work out their policy, the ACT Assembly should legislate for AI agent liability and in doing so incidentally protect all the federal systems physically in Canberra

The most annoying thing about imposter syndrome is that sometimes you're actually a bit of an imposter and you actually have weaknesses and you can't convince anyone of this because they just tell you it's imposter syndrome

so I can't say I'm an expert on sniper tactics in modern policing or combat operations, but my understanding was that snipers don't normally pre-announce the specific structure from which they'll be sniping

my core belief re all of this - AI being racist and Google giving terrible AI summaries, to Hugging Face getting pwned and a pandemic wiping us out - is that AI development cannot currently be called "engineering". we don't understand what we are doing, we don't even have the right concepts

and while it is true that there are some core, highly influential circles within AI safety that *are* a little bit, uh, strange, to put it very neutrally, that does not necessarily make them completely wrong on AI safety

Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
A swarm of autonomous AI agents, self-identifying as OpenAI agents, used a small German volunteer wiki to save answers, coordinate live, and share sandbox bypasses. OpenAI noticed and said nothing.
