Unlike Simon Clarke, I was alive during the 1970s. A combination of low inequality, low crime and aspects of culture made 1976 one of the happiest years on record in the UK. The IMF bailout had zero impact. Lesson for Simon, happiness is not just a function of wealth.

I've been a member of the lobby for well over a decade. Not a single one of my lobby colleagues has said a word about the Conservatives banning me from their conferences, without any explanation. Its unlikely Simon Clarke has bad memories of the 1970s as he was born in 1984. This helps to explain why he forgets a recession made worse by Thatcher driving interest rates up with her uneccessary monetarist policy. The only thing that saved the tories was the Falklands war & North Sea oil.

Thereby strengthening the UK and removing an (albeit imaginary) grievance from the nationalists' long list of grievances that they imagine is a case for "independence".
