Two different species, one unbreakable bond. When animals grow up together, friendship skips the rulebook of nature entirely.

Netsuke (Japan, 1701-1900). Hare grinding with a mortar and pestle. Refers to the ‘Hare in the Moon’, a messenger of the moon deity. The hare mixes the elixir of immortality with his mortar and pestle.
An exquisite, finely carved toggle from the Edo or Meiji period (1701–1900) presents a captivating depiction of the mythical Moon Hare (Tsuki no Usagi). This miniature netsuke—traditionally used as a structural counterweight to secure personal pouches to a kimono sash—is sculpted from an elegant piece of aged ivory or bone. Set against a stark black background, the composition isolates the masterful craftsmanship and playful narrative depth characteristic of Japanese miniature sagemono arts.

The sculpture centers on a personified hare depicted mid-labor, bracing its body against a deep, smoothly turned wooden-style mortar (usu). Standing upright on its hind legs, the hare grips a heavy, rounded pestle (kine) with both forepaws, captured in a dynamic moment of rhythmic pounding. In East Asian folklore, while the hare is often associated with pounding rice to make auspicious mochi cakes, this specific depiction draws upon classical mythological traditions where the creature acts as a celestial apothecary, mixing the rare ingredients for the elixir of immortality.

What elevates this particular netsuke is its remarkable attention to character and textile design. The artisan has clothed the hare in a miniature patterned robe or vest, meticulously incised with dark ink-filled lines that form geometric checkered grids and delicate floral patches across the shoulder. The animal's long, expressive ears are swept smoothly back along its neck to keep them out of the mortar's rim, and its face is carved with an expression of quiet, focused intensity. The dark, inlaid circular eyes gleam with a lifelike intelligence, catching the light perfectly. The surface of the ivory displays a warm, rich cream patina, with subtle natural grain lines and a small archival or catalog number (14509.) carefully inscribed near the base

Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425): fol. 267v, Text clevelandart.org/art/1964.40.267.b
This precious volume was obviously highly prized by its owner, the French-born King of Navarre, who had his coat of arms painted on no less than twenty folios. Rather than directly commissioning this manuscript from a specific workshop, it seems that Charles the Noble acquired his book of hours -- perhaps ready-made for the luxury market -- while on a trip to Paris in 1404-05.

A collaborative effort, six painting styles are evidenced within the pages of this codex, those of two Italians, two Frenchmen, and two Netherlanders. The painter who was responsible for the planning and decoration of the book, and who produced seventeen of the large miniatures, was a Bolognese artist known as the Master of the Brussels Initials. His principal assistant, responsible for most of the borders, was a Florentine who signed his name "Zecho" da Firenze on folio 208 verso.

At the top of a large hill, at the end of the hiking trail, is a brown and white cow attached vertically to a pole looking through binoculars. The hill has dry, dark brown vegetation. In the distance are hazy mountains, and the sky is a combo of blue and spotty clouds. The sun is illuminating the cow's belly, so the cow is looking into the direction of the morning sun.
